It was the glycerin in most lubes that was bothering me. That's what most people have trouble with according to some Google searches. I've got a tube of K-Y Warming lube without glycerin and that doesn't bother me.

All the water-based lubes I've tried make me itch, and the effect doesn't wash away easily, it bothers for a week more or less even after washing.
