Worries about antibiotics and anesthesia

Hello, I am 29 years old turning 30 soon and had weak erections most of my life. It started when I was 12 or 13 and it happened overnight. I woke up in the morning with a weak erection. I think it could be Peyronies/venous leak but I’m not sure. I have a lot of worries regarding getting an penile implant. Im afraid of taking antibiotics, especially of the fluoroquinoline class. I have chronic prostatitis and taken 3 weeks of doxycycline for it and all it did was made my prostatitis symptoms worse. It also negatively affected my cognition. It took me years to heal from it. I’m currently studying software development and computer science and I’m afraid if I take antibiotics it will ruin my cognitive abilities again and I read somewhere that general anesthesia and even spinal anesthesia can have negative side effects on cognition. I enjoy programming and do it as a hobby and I don’t want to lose any mental abilities that would affect that.

At the same time, I been living with weak erections for the majority of my life and feel like I’m missing out on having a relationship with a woman. I understand it’s like a trade off. I risk losing some of my mental abilities as a result of taking antibiotics and going under anesthesia but I gain a functional hard penis. I just have a few questions for those that got a penile implant:

1. Did you take antibiotics and how long were you on it? What kind of antibiotics was it?
2. Did you feel your cognitive abilities declined after taking the antibiotics and going under anesthesia?
3. Does having a revision done require taking antibiotics?
4. Did you ever recover from the side effects?

Thanks.

I've taken antibiotics many times over the years with no cognitive side effects. Gastro intestinal, yes. There is always some risk with anesthesia. However, I think it's the elderly that have the higher risk of cognitive damage from anesthesia. You'll most likely be fine.

I had no idea. I did a web search on the phrase, "Cognition effects of antibiotics" and found a number of articles including this one.

Hey Lost Sheep,

What is the name of the antibiotics did the doctor prescribed? Have you ever done a revision? If yes, did you have to take antibiotics again for the revision?

I would have to go back and read the articles to find the antibiotics to which the articles referred. I was not the patient(s) in the studies. I have never had a revision.

If it seemed that I had actual first-hand knowledge of these issues, I apologize. My surgeon (as I recall) did not put me on a preventative course of antibiotics before surgery and I do not recall the two weeks of antibiotics afterwards, not anything they washed into me or injected into me at the hospital.
