Hello everyone. I am a 68 year old guy that's had ED for at least 7 years. My wife and I have just found other ways besides penetration for intimacy but we've decided to try to do something about it. I have tried Viagra 100mg and Cialis 20mg and neither have worked good enough to allow penetration. Sometimes I can get what I think is a good enough erection but it seems like when I try to enter it all of a sudden "deflates". Quite frustrating.
I have been to see my primary care doc but she acts like she knows nothing about ED and has given me a referral to a urologist.
What can I expect during this first visit? Im hoping to try Trimix or some other injection but don't know what to expect.
Thanks for any help.

Welcome Curious2,
4 years ago, I had went to see my urologist about problems with my prostrate. While I was there, they had me fill out a questionnaire and it had a lot on it about ED problems. So, while I was there they talked to me about my sex problems and possible solutions, one of them was the IPP implant. It turned out I had an enlarged benign prostrate and the doc performed the Boston Scientefic Rezum procedure on me which injects small amounts of steam into the prostrate to kill part of the tissue and shrink the prostrate.
After the procedure and healing up, I had total ED, probably from nerve damage down there. I got the implant three months later, so I skipped injections.
It’s been great, and I would do it again.
Check out the implant forum, you’ll find a lot of answers there too.
Good Luck,
SWorks

Re: Just joined
Anyone else have any idea what I can expect on this first visit? Do they normally do blood tests? Any kind of exam?
Guess I'm just a little nervous.

When Viagra stopped working for me around age 71, I went to Trimix injections, which have worked fine now for eight years.
For your first visit, remember that doctors are under a lot of pressure to see as many patients per hour as possible, so research and have a list of questions written out ahead of time. Don't just go in cold. Recite your ED history immediately without the doc having to quiz you. I take a steno notebook - it's just the right size to prop on my knee and write on while I converse with the doc.
Some blood measurements should be done. Get your testosterone measured since it's a factor in some ED cases.
If you want to try Trimix, he or she (or a nurse) will hold your penis and inject a small amount into a corpus cavernosum to see if you stiffen a little after 20-30 minutes. If so, you'll get a prescription and be told how to do it at home. At that point, the Frank Talk "Injections" topic is your guide. And PM me if I can help.

Age 79 in 2024. On testosterone replacement due to hypothalamus malfunction. (Attention depressed guys: low testosterone is a cause.) Healthy health nut but ED due to getting old. Like to keep enough cardiovascular ability to thrust for 30 min.

I suggest doing your research an here as well as the internet. Write down all your questions leaving room underneath the question for you to put the answer given. Your going to be nervous and only 1/2 hear what is said so wring it down is important. Dr. has limited time will give you a few choices I'm sure.

There's no reason to be nervous. You may or may not have your junk examined by a female doctor or assistant or at least have one observing. That bothers some guys but you should get past that. If you have enough medical issues down there you'll get used to it. I no longer care in the least. If seeing my junk bothers them then they're in the wrong field.
Unless you can hear from someone who's seen the same Uro for the same reason there's no way to know what to expect from the first visit. They vary a lot. Surprisingly most Uros aren't really experts on ED stuff including IC injections. You may want to contact the Uro that your doctor referred you to and ask if they specialize in mens sexual health including injections or even implants. Your primary should test your testosterone level. Expect the Uro to draw blood for a PSA test and there's a good chance or a digital exam. You will almost certainly fill out an ED related questionaire. Depending on your wife it may be a good idea to bring her along. He may do a test injection to test your injection response and may do a doppler, but I'd guess that's unlikely on a first visit. If he/she prescribes injections he may or may not do an in office test injection and he may or may not have you do the injection. My original Uro did neither. He wrote me a script for Edex and told me to read the package insert.
I get my injection script from my Primary doctor but I already knew what I wanted and was able to talk intelligently about it. I educated her on the topic and explained what I needed and how I wanted the script. I think I'm now up to 4 Primary Doctors I've trained on what I needed for injections. Three were females and none knew squat aboud dealing with ED. You have to be able to talk on the topic with intelligence and confidence while taking care not to challenge the doctors ego. They all have sensitive egos. I think there is a real need for Primary Doctors to be better versed on the ED topic. There's a lot of guys suffering in silence with ED.
Have you tried adding novelty/sex shop cock rings to your pill routine. Many guys find that they help. Sometimes a lot. They can also boost the injections. You'll have to experiment to find which cockrings work best for you. Expect rejects. There's a thread on the subject in the "Members Only" sub-forum that you may find useful.
I hope I covered all of your topics. Feel free to ask whatever you want.
The above post suggesting you write down your questions beforehand, leaving room for answers, is a good one.

Thanks for the reply. I did have my fasting testosterone checked first thing one morning. It was 308. My primary doc that was great.

Well, I am nervous. When I worked up the nerve to go see my primary care doc, she immediately went on the defensive. She said she had never heard of Trimix. She looked it up real quick and responded with "Oh, that requires injections in the penis. I'm not doing that!" I said "no, I'm supposed to".
She did check my testosterone and it was 308 early in the a.m. with fasting. She said it was great.
I've tried to us rings. I have a cheap VED and it will make a decent erection but when I remove it, my penis goes limp before I can get the ring on good.

Curious2, tell us a little more about you, so that we can help you better. What state and city do you live in?
Maybe some FrankTalk guys are in your area and they know the right docs to see.

Curious - I like your humor: "I'm not doing that!" "No, I'm supposed to."
All good advice from bldolnk and he's right right, there are so many of us baby boomers, general practitioners should read up on ED fixes.
I wouldn't call T=308 "great." I'm no doctor but my urologist likes to keep mine around 400-500.
