Call your doctor and get new copies of the instructions. Check with your doctor about soaking. Soaking is ok if they use the right sutures and close in a watertight manner to allow for soaking. Some doctors do, some don't. If your's didn't, soaking might be bad for you. If your pain is not well controlled, ask your doctor for better pain meds. Ask about taking an anti-inflammatory (NSAID) to help with swelling. Bed rest on your back should help with swelling too.

I was not allowed baths for a number of weeks, only showers starting day after home from hospital. Ice bag was certainly my friend. I, too, would check for approval of NSAID (ibuprofen, naproxyn, etc). I suggest your incision approach, and particularly the type of stitches, would have much to do with use of tub baths or not.

Can not imagine why ice packs would not be acceptable. Make that call to surgeon.
