Does Depression lead to ED?

Postby clydechase32 » Thu Jul 11, 2019 2:22 am

Is depression is the major factor for ED? as I started noticing I am not getting an erection as much as I want? and if the answer is yes then what should I do?

Depression can lead to ED, yes. it is a combination of things though. Depression leads to low libido/interest in sex. Low interest mean low/no arousal. That means no erection. You can go through the motions, but without arousal, there will be no erection.
Also, anxiety is part of depression. Anxiety definitely kills erections. This is why you need a good sexual medicine specialist as well as a therapist/sex therapist to talk to.
If you are being treated for depression with medication (which is usually a good part of treatment along with therapy) your antidepressant drug may be causing ED or low libido issues. There are other antidepressants which may have fewer side effects.

The short answer is "Yes, it can." And, as Paul said, so can the meds often used to treat depression.

The only editorial comment I would add is that ED is ED. There is no ED for gay men and a different ED for other men. A limp dick is a limp dick and the various causes thereof are the same, whether they be mental or physical.

I will also note that ED can lead to depression as well as depression leads to E.D.

I am not a doctor. However....

ED can cause (almost always causes?) depression and depression can certainly be a cause of ED. "The most important sexual organ in the human is the brain."

Peace.

The second part of your question seems to have not gotten the attention that the first part has. Perhaps because that is more difficult to answer without a lot more information, and even with that information, it is a challenge. That is why psychologists, psychiatrists, family counselors, and other such professionals exist and also why bookstores are full of self-help books.

What to do?

Assess any medications you are taking for side effects. Talk to your pharmacist also (they often know more than prescribing physicians).

Assess your relationship(s). Partner(s) supportive? Do you feel good about how you are treated? Do you feel good about how you treat your lover(s).

Assess the rest of your life. Are you under a lot of stress?

Assess your general health. Are you exercising? Is there any disease process (perhaps that you do not know about)? Exercise can brighten one's mood and some diseases can cause E.D. (arterial disease, diabetes, etc).

Taking the bull by the horns and confronting a problem goes a LONG way toward breaking a cycle of downward spiral.

Yes, depression may lead to ED.

And to make matters worse, most antidepressants, esp. SSRIs, will also cause or worsen ED.

There is a mild antidepressant called tianeptine (brand name Stablon) that could actually help with ED. And apomorphine hydrochloride (brand names Uprima, Zyprima) is a centrally acting ED treatment that increases dopamine levels in the brain.

I have tried both these treatments and they were great but only a doctor can say what's best for you.

Just a bit of personal experience...

Have been treated for depression for over 30 years. The SSRI meds did decrease my libido and eventually led to ED. However, about three years ago, my psych and I weaned me away from two antidepressants, Seroquel and Paroxetine. When the Paroxetine finally exited my system, I had a strong resurgence of libido. Like an express train coming down the tracks. However, my age works against me in the ED department (I am 82) but with the help of my handy Encore Impo-Aid vacuum pump and constriction rings, the ED is managed.

So, my point is that some anti-depressants are more problematic to ED and libido than others. I still an antidepressant (different one) and things seem to be in balance.
