blood in urine

Postby Gingertom3 » Tue Dec 07, 2010 7:19 am

I know this is a site for discussing ed problems. But a lot of us have ed problems as a result of a prostatectomy, radical or robotic or whatever. I just want to call attention to another problem that may arise from the prostate cancer.
There is always the possibility that a cancer cell may have escaped into the bladder before or during the operation.
Now I don't know whether that is what happened to me. But in early November i had blood in my urine. In fact I had blood clots. They call this gross hematuria. And it can be indicative of bladder cancer or of something wrong with the kidneys.
I underwent a CT scan yesterday. That showed healthy kidneys. And then I had a cystoscopy. A little periscope at the end of a fibre optic cable was threaded up through my urethra. I got to watch it on a monitor. Fascinating stuff. And I viewed the inside of my bladder. No enemy ships, but there were two nasty looking growths. The doctor explained that they appeared huge under magnification but were in fact very miniscule polyps. However, they were cancerous.
I don't think anyone can say categorically that they originated in the prostate. That's just my supposition.
Anyway, surgery will be scheduled soon, maybe even before Christmas. I am grateful for the fast-tracking.
The periscope through the penis wasn't uncomfortable or painful. An anaesthetising gel was squited into my penis so that I felt nothing. That was a relief. Afterwards there was some slight stinging when I urinated.
During the forthcoming surgery though a bigger "periscope" will be inserted. And I will have to be under general anaesthetic.
I just don't look forward to the pain and discomfort afterwards. I am going to have one hell of a sore dick.
And I suspect I'll have to have a catheter again, and then some continence problems, and then more ed problems.
So what is the point in my relating all this? Be aware when you urinate that there is no blood. And if there is, see your doctor straight away. Blood in urine means there is a real problem. And a problem like that needs seeing to straightaway.

Jim, sorry to hear this news. I would have thought that they would have been able to loop and snip a small polyp with the scope. I do hope they can get you scheduled ASAP. I bet you dick will not like that vacation!

Take care. The good thing is that you saw the blood and got it investigated. So often we men just let that stuff ride thinking it will crear up on its own.

The best to you.

Thank you both for your replies. They help. I'll keep you posted.
And Josh - that quotation from the German philosopher is brilliant. It made me laugh. Laughter, they say, is the best medicine.

Jerry:

Well, isn't that the sh*ts!! It is amazing what we guys go thru. The good part, as you noted, was early detection. Fingers & toes crossed for your complete recovery.

Most importantly, THANKS for sharing this journey. I would not have placed immediate action on some blood in the urine. Now I know; thanks to you!

My Best
