Questions About Turp

Postby Ffrorg » Sun Jun 29, 2025 1:18 pm

Hi guys, my urologist is recommending TURP for an enlarged prostate. Has anyone had one in the last 5 or so years? How was it? Has it been successful for alleviating urinary symptoms? How about side effects like incontinence and leaking?

I'm also worried about retrograde ejaculation. Obviously there's a quality of life issue, but I'm really hesitant about this. Any guys have experience with this? How do you experience it and how do your partners feel about it or react? Medication isn't working and it's sounding like there's not really another option on the table in terms of intervention.

The TURP procedure is considered the one to compare other procedures by. I haven't had that one, as doctors here seem to go with laser treatment. There are different colored light laser procedures, and I have had two 'green light' surgery. They were not painful at all, and only had to take it easy for a while.
I came home soon after surgery with a catheter which I removed the next morning.
And yes, there is no ejaculation afterward and that is a disappointment.
But being able to empty the bladder is much better that UTIs. catheters, and leaking is better for me. I do still leak some, but that might could be better with pelvic floor exercises.
I hope someone with the TURP responds to your post.

I had the TURP procedure and another, back in early 2000s.
I had a problem of not being able to control urination. I was constantly having an urge to pee and if I wasn't close or able to use a restroom, I wouldn't be able to HOLD IT. I'd get wet. It was terrible out on the highway, I'd have to stop at every rest stop.
The procedure did help, I no longer had the problem for many years.

But the main after effect is my problem and concern. It does cause "retrograde ejaculation" or "dry orgasm". Will never be able to "CUM" during any sexual activity. I miss that ability.
I think I've heard from others that newer procedures are less evasive.

Good luck to you.

I didn't have TURP but green loght laser surgery. Now almost 6 months later I am incontinent, sleep with thick pads at night and use an incontinence clamp and thin pad during the day unless it bothers me then I switch back to the thick pads. I have been goint to physical therapy at a place where they specialize in incontinence but I don't seem to be making any great progress. I also have retro grade ejaculation and only masturbate wihic is messy because urine squirts out like crazy. Sex with another person is out of the question. I'll most likely be a candidate for an artificial urinary sphincter. It will be an AMS 800 system in conjunction to my AMS 700 LGS. I doube I'll let the same surgeon that did my implant and green laser do the sphincter. It was a botch job. If I could do it over again, I wouldn't. I would be happy to have my slow weak stream and ejaculation back.
Implanted with AMS 700 LGX on April 28, 2023. Viagra no longer worked and tried injections but didn't always work and felt achy.

Here's a video by Dr. Malik discussing all the various surgical options for BPH, there are a lot of them out there! TURP seems like one of the most invasive options, but might be the best if you have severe BPH. Other less invasive treatments like Rezum or ITIND would be my preference if they were appropriate for my level of BPH.

I had to have an emergency TURP surgery, and it probably saved my life.
I had a severe urinary blockage that caused urine to back up into both kidneys damaging them severely.
My kidney function went down to 22% (GFR).

I had the surgery and got a urinary infection, and later another one.

After the infections cleared my bladder was able to empty.
I haven't had any leakage issues.

At my age the retrograde ejaculation isn't a problem and my wife couldn't care less.
If we were at the age of wanting to bear children, it would be a bad situation.

I've heard of a REZUM procedure that I'd look into first. It wasn't an option for me.

Another thing I noticed is my PSA fell a lot, but I do still have prostate cancer. My urologist isn't concerned since I'm so goddam old.

Gleason 6 prostate cancer. Monitoring it for now.
Update: On my last biopsies the cancer wasn't found.
