A couple of months ago I took a delta-8 gummy. My reaction mirrored many people taking edibles. The "high" took hours to take effect and lasted much longer than expected. My suspicions are that Delta-8 THC is indeed half as potent as Delta-9(regular) THC. Of course if the manufacturer then adds twice as much Delta-8 ???.

My experience was NOT the "pleasant, mild, soporific, effect advertised on the package. It was a full blown, wasted experience best described as baked. Next time, if there is a next time, I will try 1/2 a gummy.

Just my experience, but if you want the high that D8 provides, it needs to be smoked. By now i have tried gummies, cookies, brownies and the various syrups and smoking it gives me an almost on demand high after a few minutes. Normal plain CBD products dont do anything for us as we tried those first. For me and the wife D8 is almost like spanish fly. Lol. Have not tried the D9 or 10 but have tried multiple D8 flower strains and we like the Indica rather than sativa. Once it hits it’s just a great all over body high that enhances every feeling that i share with my wife. For us its a pretty mind blowing experience.

What time of day do you recommend a newbie or someone just getting started exploring cannabinoids to do edibles? I have never smoked or vaped anything, so I have no knowledge of that at all.

it all depends on the situation when its used. nowadays we only use it when we have sex. but prior to us using it for that purpose, we would just use it to chill out on weekends. we would always watch something funny and it definitely made everything funnier. smoking it will give you immediate effects but if you want to try an edible you need to start early. edibles can take hours to take effect depending on body weight and what's in your stomach as it has to work its way through. if starting out, plan on staying in in order to see what your tolerance will be. start out small and do not fall into the "well, i ate an edible an hour ago and i still don't feel anything so ill eat more trap". when i tried a brownie, i ate half first and nothing else for the rest of the night. after it only gave me mild high, the next time i ate the whole thing and i got the desired effect but it did not last as long. like i said before, smoking it gives us the desired effect longer and more intense. it will take some trial and error. also remember that it amplifies your feelings. so if you're feeling down it may just take you further down. it takes being in a good or normal mindset. i describe it as great alcohol buzz without the hangover effects of drinking a lot. hope this helps.

I feel a little more comfortable with edibles because I have zero experience with cannabinoids any other way. I know vape shops are popular places with some people, but I don't want to inhale oils or some unknown substance. I suppose people could question edibles, but edibles just seem easier and somewhat safer. IDK it's probably not really a smart answer or justification. I'm a total newbie so that's where I am. My interest is in plants that help and heal, so that's kind of how I got interested in wanting to explore cannabinoids.

Pretty much anything besides flower will contain other things. Edibles are not regulated in the manufacturing process, meaning you could be eating anything. I'm sure most places are clean, but again, no oversight. Vapes, oils, waxes, etc. have all been extracted via some chemical process and there are residues left behind in trace amounts.
As mentioned, edibles take time to notice any effect causing some folks to take more too soon, then have a bad experience. All of my experience using cannabis for pain control finds flower is the best, quickest and most cost effective. Using a water bong through a good desktop vaporizer will be the smoothest way to consume.

All that aside, I would not know how to make brownies with a special ingredient.

It's not brain surgery. Buy Betty Croker brownie mix or whatever brand. Mix brownie mix. Take marijuana and run it through a screen (found at head shop or pot dispensary). Grind it further in a blender or mortar and pestle if a little texture in your brownie bothers you. Add marijuana to brownie mix, put in pan and bake according to instructions on box. As for how much pot to add I can't help you. It was ~50 years ago when I was doing that stuff and I don't remember how much I added, besides the new stuff is supposed to be much more powerful. I guess ask the pot salesperson (dealer) how many highs should be in the volume of pot you purchased and then figure that into how many brownie squares you expect to get from your mix. Don't smoke any first or you might burn your brownies.

I saw a brownie kit at a waterbeds and stuff store and it was too expensive for me. It didn't have the cannabinoids in it, you had to provide that from what I could understand. So I didn't get the point. Why not get brownie mix at the grocery store?

All that aside, I would not know how to make brownies with a special ingredient.

Yes, a boxed brownie mix from the store works well. As bldoink says, mix in the marijuana with the dry mix, then follow package directions to mix and bake. It may smell up the house some. About 1/2 ounce will be sufficient for a standard brownie box mix.
To prepare the marijuana remove any stems and seeds, break it down then grind it in a blender. You want it to be close to powder basically or the brownies will be grainy. If you want no grainy taste sift the marijuana first, regrind what doesn't fall through and sift again.
Cut an 8 X 8 pan into 16 squares. If you're new to this, I'd start with a half square. Wait at least an hour to feel the effects before you eat more. You'll need to find your comfort level with edibles, maybe need to eat a larger dose, or maybe a smaller dose. Once you know what one square will do, you can adjust.

There is about 1500 mg of THC in 1/2 of an oz. A commercially available gummie has 10mg of active THC. In the recipe above each of those 16 brownies would be the equivalent of almost 10 gummies. I don't know about y'all but I wouldn't be able to get off the couch after eating one of those and would likely still feel the effects well into the next day.
