I'll tell you how I do it. I don't claim to be an expert. I do caution that not every technique will work equally for everyone. You will need to experiment some. You will also need to experiment to find the proper size constriction ring. You don't want tighter than necessary but of course it has to be tight enough.
With me, taking generic Viagra beforehand does help me. With me, Viagra alone does not produce any kind of erection or even the stirrings of one. However, it does seem to allow the vacuum to more easily pull blood into my dick, making the pump up substantially easier. Erotic stimulation, from wife if that's the ultimate intent, also helps.
Use plenty of lube. It's a necessity. Organic coconut oil works great but some others may clean up easier. Load the constriction ring on your VED. Put a little lube on the ring applicator. The rings will last longer if you do. I will pump, hold for a minute and then mostly release for 30 seconds or so. I then repeat and continue repeating until I get it up to the desired size. If I try to pump to size in one go I'll get edema. Then pull the ring down off the tube onto your dick. Don't leave it on much over 20 minutes. If necessary, take the ring off and let it recover a bit and then re-apply (Change out blood supply).
Some guys, either from more regular use or just from different physical makeup can do it much more easily and quicker. That's great for them. If I try to rush the pumping process I get too much edema.
I expect you will get better advice from the guys who are more regular users of the VED and constriction rings for sexual activity.
Good luck.

I want to try using a pump for an erection,
You want to sustain an erection for a period of time outside of the vacuum cylinder?
You will need restriction rings for that. The encore pump comes with a CD that explains how to use fairly well.
I have an Encore pump with both manual and electric pump.
When I got mine I just pumped and released for 10-15 minutes a night for weeks. When I started using the rings I would pump up add a ring and take a shower with the sustained erection. This went on for weeks and at first it was somewhat disconcerting to see my purple hued dick and to feel how cold it was with the ring on. After steady use over time the coldness has all but disappeared.
You may decide after some experimenting to look into some different rings. You may decide to use 2 rings instead. There are good threads on this site about various restriction rings. I have found the following foam sleeve to help ease some of the discomfort caused by the restriction rings. http://uandmetime.com/products/store/#e ... ct=4958534
My experience is that using a pump takes time and patience.

On average, how many times do you have to pump (manual) to get results?
67 yrs old. I have been a Viagra user for at least a dozen yrs or so; have been increasing dosage the last few yrs and only experienced diminishing results.

The Erecaid is a good choice. Depending on the severity of your ED, the included constriction bands mY not be tight enough to maintIn your erection. If they don’t work well, I recommend getting an Osbon Constriction band.

I'm not certain I understand your question. If you're referring pumping for sexual use and to my earlier post my response is:
I will pump and release 3 to 4 times before I get pumped up to my desired size and firmness before pulling the constriction band down off the tube onto my dick during that final pump. This occurs over maybe 5 minutes or so.
I believe dtwarren has a different experience due to luck of the draw or practice. I believe he's able to get it done in one go at it.
There will almost certainly be some experimentation discovering the correct ring or ring combination.

I think that answers my question. It takes more than a few pumps to get results?

It does for me but I don't think that's true for everyone. I gathered from earlier posts and threads from others, and I think dtwarren was one of them, that some guys can pump up much easier and quicker. Hopefully it will be that way for you too. If not, the way I have to do it works.

I got L.A pumps
I like it. The only thing you could break is the hand pump.
Some say it is the one at harbor freight. Either way you can replace it get a better pump online or auto parts store. The cylinder is breakable. I stepped on it. My fault. I cracked it badly. I put glue.
Holding okay for now. Pretty strong. Not that cheap. Some are more expensive. This does not require you but more parts. That why I bought it.
Best of luck.

WOW! I have long been an advocate of VEDs for penile health (elasticity, size, etc) and found a couple of Medical Journal articles on my own, but THIS article and the articles to which it links so so much more complete than the random resources I found.
Thanks for posting the link.
To all who are curious about what VED therapy can do for you at any stage of ED, read this AND read all the articles at the links it contains. Well worth it.
Thanks, AnotherOldMan for finding this.
It should be in the "Must Read" list. (edited to add - It IS already on the list. I just checked the thread in "General Discussion / Documents Worth Reading List" .)
