Hey everyone, long-time reader, first-time poster.

I've been dealing with ED for the better part of 10 years now, and last year built up the courage to finally do something about it. I'm 43, married, and my wife is very supportive and understanding, so I have that going for me. I'm trying not to just throw my hands in the air and fast-forward to getting an implant, but I have to admit that it's a mental challenge to just follow the process. I've tried Viagra and Cialis (both as-needed and daily versions) over the past year with little to no success.

At the advice of my urologist, I went ahead and ordered a VED. I want to start slow and just work on getting an erection and not go straight to prepping for sex so I can get a feel for it. I tried it for the first time yesterday, and was not very successful for a couple reasons:

1. I was struggling to keep suction. I used a silicone base and plenty of lube, but it just didn't want to hold.

2. When it did get a grip and keep suction, it felt, well, very uncomfortable. Like my dick was telling me that it was just wrong to be pulled at from every angle and blown up like a balloon that was sure to pop. In no way did it feel like an erection, just a high-pressure inflation. I wouldn't even say it got hard, it just expanded a little.

I cut my session short as I was really feeling uncomfortable with it. Like I said before, I'm trying to follow the process, but I have a tendency to talk my way out of things I don't really want to do. I'm hoping some of you can provide some advice here. I know the suction thing is a fairly common struggle for beginners, but are my feelings of discomfort common? Will they go away, or is that just how it is when using these things?

Your Urologist should have recommended bimix trimix or even quadmix injections. You can maintain an erection for a long time and is a lot more affordable than pills. I would find a Urologist that specifies in ED.

If you have any pills left you can try taking one prior to using the VED. When I do it makes it easier to pump up.

It is, IMHO, very important to do some serious manscaping prior to using a VED. It makes using it a lot easier due to being easier to get a seal. It can eliminate the pain of pulled hairs. Later, when you use a constriction ring it will be a lot less painful to be well groomed.

Using plenty of lube is a must. Use it.

Using a VED does take some practice. It also seems your dick gets used to the process and begins to pump up easier.

Don't rush the process. Pump and release, repeat. Don't try to get all of the way pumped up immediately. Pump and release, pump and release, slowly getting bigger until desired inflation is reached. If you're pumping to the point of pain you need to back off. Be patient.

Again, some serious manscaping really does make pumping easier, starting with getting an easy seal. I have a Norelco rechargeable trimmer designed for the purpose. I don't recall the model. I mow my bush but don't shave it all off. I just keep it short. I don't want to look shaved. I do shave around the base of my dick. It sure makes getting that seal way easier. The Norelco can get it plenty short enough around the base for that purpose.

I also do other trimming for ring use. Getting hairs wrapped around a silicone ring is not a good thing and is to be avoided. One experience will convince you of that.

I do some other trimming but thats at wifeies request and not necessary for the topic at hand.

There are other members on here that are the real experts on VED use. Hopefully you'll hear more from them.

Bldoink has fairly well explained it all. All I can add is make sure you are pushing the cylinder tight against your fat pad. It sometimes takes a minute or so before your dick starts to expand so be patient and give it time to expand without using too much vacuum.

I have a “sex shop” type pump with a vacuum gauge which I use first to condition my dick. The vacuum gauge allows you to limit the vacuum to under 5 inches of mercury (5 hg) which is the highest vacuum you should subject your dick to in order to avoid discomfort. It also allows you to get a feel For what you are feeling in the VED.

Keep working at it. Do a few short sessions a day. Bldoink is correct about the manscaping and the lube.
It can be frustrating at first. I was ready to toss mine after the first day. A lower cost sex shop pump for exercise is another excellent suggestion.

As for the silicone, it's basically just a ring that's supposed to help with suction, but isn't actually helping.

I'll keep trying, just uncomfortable with the whole thing to be honest. I did discuss the injections with my urologist, but I'm pretty gun-shy when it comes to those. It's not the pain factor, I'm not too worried about that. It's more the horror stories I've heard, both short and long-term. Really, with both the pump and the injections, I have this irrational fear of doing irreparable harm. While I know the implant is a permanent thing, there's something about it being in someone's hands other than my own that makes me feel more comfortable with it. I think it's just a mental block I need to overcome somehow.

Encore is the one I use for sex. I don't use a silicon ring, just the pump. Sometimes it may take 3 or 4 pumps before I feel the vacuum start. When I started with a VED it was another brand and I had to totally shave my pubic area in order to achieve vacuum. Lots of lube, the included tube of lube, helped. Have you tried getting a vacuum against another surface area of your body, your upper thigh for example? If you can get a vacuum there or elsewhere we can rule out a defective pump. At times I have not put the pump mechanism into cylinder completely or got it in crooked.

I don't usually use the lever with my other hand like they show in some of the how-to videos. Since I am right handed I grip the the pump with my left hand and use that to press. I pump with my right hand. Pumping causes the pump to press even more into my abdomen. Once good vacuum is achieved the pressing is no longer necessary.

My understanding of your problem is that you are unable to get a vacuum? At least at first I would eliminate the silicone ring, shave my pubic area, use lots of lube, and verify the pump is working properly.

I totally agree with AnotherOldMan.

Just to add couple of points:

I rub some lubricant gel on the end of the VED tube before starting. The gel, being thicker, helps form a seal against my groin.

Also, I utilize the silicone constriction rings that come with the Encore Impo-Aid pump. I avoid using a silicone base lube because it will degrade the silicone rings and shorten their life. With the coconut oil, the rings will last for months.
