What side effects if any

Postby kwsquirrel » Tue Feb 04, 2025 3:27 pm

I am considering injections vs pills. There seems to be a few potential bad ones with pills but not so much with injections? Other than 4 hour worries has anyone had a bad one? Or are there really any?

The amount of medication injected is quite small so systemic effects similar to some of the pills side effects aren’t really possible.

But injections can have risks and downsides.
The risk of priapism is real when first starting out. For that reason it’s great if you can have your first injection in your urologist’s office. This is fairly common but not universal. It helps to have someone knowledgeable teach you proper injecting technique and give you feedback as you do it. And they will be able to sort out issues with dosing from that experiment.

After your dose is sorted out the risk of priapism is very very low.

Otherwise the risks are the risks with any injection: bleeding, scarring, infection.

Bleeding can be minimized with good technique while injecting and holding pressure on the site for a minute or so after.

Scarring can be minimized with good technique as well. It’s important to feel and understand your anatomy. Check regularly and feel for lumps and bumps in the area where you inject. A small lump at the site of the last injection that goes away in a day or two is not a big deal. But if you feel changes that aren’t going away then stop injecting until you have been seen by your urologist’s office.

And infection risk is minimized by good technique as well.

Side effects of injecting over time are changes in shape, curvature, thickening of the areas where injections are placed, shortening. Scarring and fibrosis can eventually require escalating doses and injections may eventually fail.

Another thing to keep in mind is dependence. Pills were still working great for me under the right circumstances, so I just started injections as a insurance policy. But injections very quickly made it so pills wouldn't work anymore, and injection doses quickly escalated for effect.

You also cannot use injections more than three times a week. Once it goes down, it is pretty much impossible to get hard again the same day (or longer) any other way. No more afternoo, evening, and morning sex on a hot weekend. No daily solo sex.

If you can still make pills work, even if you need a cockring for good effect, my recommendation would be to just do pulls and avoid injection therapy. You can't really go back grom injections to pills. I regret it very much.

Once you commit to using injections as your primary therapy, you need to be examined by your urologist on a regular basis. That way there can catch scarring/fibrosis problems early.

Unfortunately shots are not a permanent solution if you're young and/or having frequent sex. Scarring of the tunica will gradually occur no matter how careful you are if the tunica is poked too often with needles. Like pills, a lot of men find they gradually have to keep increasing their injection dosage. At higher dosages, you may get aching/cramps in your penis after the injections wear off. And there's the hassle factor of having to interrupt intimacy to give yourself shots in your penis.

If all other therapies have failed for you except shots, expect that some day you'll be at your urologist's office asking about a penile implant.

When I was interviewing surgeons for my penile prosthesis, more than one told me they don't recommend penis pump/ring or injection therapies because of their low longterm patient satisfaction rates. Their view is: if pills don't work or stop working and you have a way to pay for it, get an implant.

Injections have been working well for me for going on 14 years. They've maintained my length and haven't given me peryonies.

I'm 69 and have been using trimex for about a year and a half.
Two side effects for me....

1st. I am larger while flaccid for about 24 hours after injecting

2nd. I don't spend anytime at all now worrying about getting an erection...

Wow 14 years. What kind of injection are you using and how many times a week?

Anything in particular that you've found helpful?

All I've used has been alprostadil (PGE1) mono-mix. It was initially in the form of the proprietary Edex cartridges. However my insurance quit covering it pretty quickly and I've been on a compounded alprostadil mix from Coastal Compounding in West Palm Beach.

In much of the past I was injecting 3 times a week and 4 time fairly freequently. Lately, it's just been two and sometimes one. The wife has been having some health issues.

I've always tried to be careful to alternate sides when injecting. I always compress the injection site after injecting although probably not as long as I should. I also use more realestate for my injections than is commonly suggested. On the clock face I use at least 2 to 4 and8 to 10 and from less than an inch under the glans to about 1.25" from the base. I only depress the plunger when it depresses easily. For one, lack of plunger resistance indicates you're in the correct spot. Also, not forcing meds into tissues that don't appreciate them is IMHO less likely to damage them.
