NHS UK Prescriptions

Postby WestLad » Wed Jun 10, 2026 5:24 am

NHS UK guidelines say that one ED treatment per week should be sufficient for qualifying men. However, if the prescriber in exercising their clinical judgement considers that more than one treatment a week is appropriate, then the prescriber can prescribe that amount on the NHS.

In my case, I was previously prescribed with 12 vials of 20mcg Alprostadil every 8 weeks, and (because I only needed a 5mcg dose each injection), I was able to create multiple doses by diluting with Bacteriostatic water.

During my last routine review of medications with my GP, she asked how I was getting on with my injections.
Jokingly, I said that I could always use more.
Unprompted, she doubled my prescription to 12 doses every 4 weeks…

I know that some GPs will not go beyond the basic NHS guidelines of one treatment per week.
Others are more accommodating, and listen to the patient’s wishes.
