My doctor has discussed me starting injections. I asked about the ingredients that are in the mix. I see many of you have talked about the different meds. The three that they use are prostaglandin, papaverine, and phentolamine. Does anyone have experience with these products?

It's commonly called Trimix. I'm still a noob and about where you are now. From what I've learned is that there seems to be 2 different formulas of Trimix. Your Doc can sort that out. My insurance covers Edex which is a brand name for Alprostadil but even with that my out of pocket will be >300 USD for 4 doses! Some describe Trimix as rocket fuel because of it's effectiveness. It seems to be alot more affordable even if insurance doesn't cover it. Next uro. visit I'm changing over. The pros of Edex is that it doesn't need refrigeration because it gets mixed prior to use. Cons: cost, any leftover should be discarded. Trimix pros: cheaper, more effective Cons: You need a compounding pharmacy to make it, requires refrigeration.

alfa88 is correct, you're referring to what's called tri-mix. There are near endless possible variations of the mix although the commercial high volume compounders generally have several "standard" mixes. Your doctor my be planning on sending you to one of the pharmacies and using one of their standard mixes or he may be writing just for use and using a pharmacy that makes to order.

The Edex that alfa88 uses is a straight alprostadil (Also known as prostaglandin or PGE1) mix, which is one of the ingredients of your tri-mix. If it was bought generically through a compounding pharmacy, that will supply it, it would be known as Mono-mix. Purchased that way it is perishable and has to be kept frozen but is generally priced like that of tri-mix. Some commercial compounding pharmacies that sell "standard" tri-mix formulations won't do mono-mix. I think that's because they sell the crap out of tri-mix and doing a mono-mix just doesn't fit into their economics. I use the mono-mix due to the cost of Edex and I'm very satisfied with it.

If you go to the "Documents and etc Worth Reading" post at the very start of the "General Discussion" page, you'll find all kinds of info on trimix formulas and other injectables.
