Injection Costs

My uro gave me a prescription for Caverject. My insurance denied the claim and now the pharmacy wants $309 for one 20 mcl vial. Obviously this isn't going to work for me. Are there any lower cost alternatives? What can I expect to spend? Thanks for any help.

Not sure how to convert mcl to mg, but if it is 1:1, 20 mcl should equal 20 mg. I was previously charged $75 for 5 mg of Trimix which would be $300 for 20 mg or about the same as you are being charged. My insurance no longer covers this compounding pharmacy but switched me to Avella Pharmacy in Phoenix, AZ - 877 546 5780. I am not aware of the cost at Avella but it should be lower than $300. After insurance, I am now paying $7.95 for 10 mg.

Give them a call. Perhaps your insurance will cover Caverject or Trimix prescriptions filled at this compounding pharmacy.

If our Uro wants you to stay on Edex or Caverject. You can get the same drug from a coupound pharmacy. That name is Prostan I think.

Or tell the Uro that the drug is too expensive. Trimix is cheeper and Bimix is also cheeper but you should get good results.

mcl?? mg of Trimix??

Once again our schools have failed us miserably on math and science education and the Metric System! (And most of us are old enough to have been in highschool BEFORE science and math went south).

Caverject systems are measured in mcg/ml I believe -- and 20mcg/ml is pretty standard -- except don't you get like 6 Caverject injection systems per prescription?? I hope it was not just a single one .. wow -- that would be expensive.
And hell .. 6 at $309 is also bad.

If any consolation, MUSE is around $300 retail for 6 injects -- but at least you are getting 6000 mcg total of PGE-1 in that case.

Also buying direct from CVS (for example) or local Pharmacy will always result in the highest cost -- even if co-pay applied (OK you said no insurance pay )' CVS is notorious for charging incorrectly -- often full retail -- and saying there is no co-pay price -- they are EVIL).

And Trimix is measured in ml .. not mg (although of course 1 ml of water = 1mg weight of water so either could be used -- but ml it is...).

I looked into the cost of Caverject a few weeks back as my Uro and I agreed to switch from Trimix over to Caverject once my current Trimix supply is finished. Cost of a 20mcg or 40mcg Caverject kit should be around $50-60/each, retail without insurance coverage. Scripts are typically filled in quantities of six, and your pharmacist may have been pricing this quantity when giving you the $300 figure.

Suggest you talk to your doc or his office about the cost, and see if they can suggest a low cost pharmacy for you. Or, because of cost, see if he will switch you to Trimix. Trimix will definitely be cheaper than Caverject, figure about $125 for 10-20 injections.

If you haven't already, you might also ask your doc for a couple of Caverject samples to see if they are right for you before going the next step. My doc gave me two 40mcg sample kits to try the last time I saw him. One reason I suggest the sample route is that the side effects I had from Caverject were bothersome compared to Trimix.

American Pharmacy Solutions has, sadly, been bought out by Wells Pharmacy of Wellington, FL -- so no more great prices.

(although APS still has some kind of job filling prescriptions for elder patients ... Trimix etc is handled by Wells).

I submitted a prescription for 5 ml Standard Trmix for a quote from Wells -- not so good:

$90 for 5ml standard Trimix + $27 for shipping.

So not much better than my local pharmacy -- who also charges $90 for 5 ml.

Anyone have any good recent quotes from mailorder pharmacies?

I got my first supply of Tri-Mix today. The conversions get complicated, but this is what I got for $65:

2 vials of dry PGE/Pap/Phent 8.88mcg/16.67mg/.58mg
2 10ml bottles of Sodium Chloride (2ml used for each mixture)
2 syringes to mix the two

The instructions say to use 2ml of the SC with the dry stuff

I'm to put .1ml into a syringe for my injections.

I guess the price isn't bad as long as the strength is sufficient. Why am I skeptical?

I didn't get injection syringes, so I bought 10 for $5. I know I can do better online, but I needed them asap.

I'd appreciate any observations.

As far as I know, Trimix should come ready to use. Are you sure you have Trimix?

I get insulin syringes at CVS for around 30 cents apiece, as I recall.
