Share your best tip for traveling with shots.

Travelling with shots can be a bit of a hassle. But with a little planning it’s not too bad.

What are your best travel tips for guys that need to bring along their shots?

My shots always needed refrigeration and travelling long distances (flights, long train trips) and not knowing if the hotel rooms would have a refrigerator was a drag. My solution was to put my vial in a ziplock baggy, (I’d put that in another baggy for double protection). I’d put that in a decent thermos. The same kind you’d use for bringing coffee to work. I’d fill it to the brim with ice and it would stay cold for 36 hours. By that time I had reached my destination/fridge or had a chance to change the ice.

It was small and would go in my checked luggage.

I also travelled with a photocopy of my prescription. I never needed it in 10 years of doing shots, but just in case any authority ever asked I’d be able to show them that.

I'm still experimenting so I look forward to tips from other guys. What I have tried, is to take a large coffee thermos and fill it with dry ice. This is the most assured way I know to keep it actually cold and I don't mind if it freezes - in fact I would prefer that it did. This is easy to get through TSA. Once I arrive, and for subsequent ongoing travel, I then just use ice. This becomes a hassle at TSA so I have to dump it at the airport to get through security and then go find a vendor who's willing to give me some ice to fill it back up again.

I have a couple of the specialized transport thermoses that come with a gel pack but I prefer the dry ice. The gel pack will keep it cool but has no chance of keeping it frozen, which is my preference. And when traveling, it's hard to find anywhere to re-freeze the gel packs; it's easier to find ice.

My next trip is about 2 months long so it presents some new challenges. I'll probably combine both the dry ice and gel pack strategies. With the amount of medicine I'lk be taking, some needs freezing and some okay with just being cooled.

Slightly off topic, but another strategy I use is to have some backup medicine that's in lyophilized form that I can keep without worrying about cooling it. I have this for both TriMix and phenylephrine.

I've tried to keep it cool but have found that it can be at room temperature for a long time without much drop in effectiveness. I went to Phoenix during the summer and had it in a diabetic cold pack. By the time I got to my room it was no longer cold. Kept it in the refrigerator whenever possible but it got to room temperature many times. I never let it get as hot as it could have in the Arizona sun. Flew back home and once again it was no longer frozen. It worked fine over the next few days. I don't really have any way of measuring deterioration but erections seldom lasted less than 90 minutes which is all I really look for. Often over two hours. I would have to say there is some drop-off from what I've read but it really wasn't noticeable to me and I'm not going to go to heroic measures to keep it cold going forward.
