New to the board--introduction

Postby gerryp » Fri Dec 14, 2012 2:55 pm

I'm a 74 year old guy suffering from ED since my open prostatectomy 9 years ago. I've spent a lot of time in the last couple of weeks researching implants and reading this board. A hearty thanks to all who contribute and who make this board possible.

Have decided that an IPP is my only realistic solution and decided that I should seek a well-regarded high volume surgeon to do the job. What made me think of an IPP? Well, it was a recent annual check-up with my urologist and an off-hand remark I made about lack of success with the various ED meds. He suggested I should think about a penile implant. He doesn't do them, but a local urologist here in Sarasota, FL, does. As far as I can tell that surgeon hasn't been doing them very long, and has a low volume. If anyone's going to insert something into my penis, he'd better be very experienced and currently be doing a high volume!

Searches on this board and elsewhere revealed a number of docs around the country that fit that bill, but I'm zeroing in on Dr. Francois Eid in New York, as many others here have also done. I called his office today to set up an initial phone consultation and his first available appointment was in one month. I imagine Christmas and New Year holidays have something to do with that. At any rate, that's my first step, and we'll see how it goes from there.

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone outside of the NY area who used Dr. Eid. It appears he's well set up to work with out-of-staters and even guys from overseas. If you used any other surgeon and travelled by air to reach him, I'd also like to hear about your experiences.

Many thanks,

Gerry

Hi Gerry,

I flew about 1000 miles to have Dr Eid do my surgery. See viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1308&p=8515#p8515 I have also posted other comments, which you can find by searching for my posts. NE_Bob also travelled about 3 hours by train for surgery with Dr Eid. You can search for his posts which describe some of his experiences. I don't know if he is active here any more, but he was also helpful to me prior to my surgery in answering questions via PM, in addition to what he posted publicly. You could try PM'ing him to see if you get a reply. Dr Eid gave me a list of over 400 patients with phone numbers who were willing to talk to me. I'm sure he can give you an idea of which of those were from far out of town, and you might be able to guess that from the phone numbers too. Of course, those 400 were chosen by him out of at least 3-4000 of his patients. You can also search for "Eid" here in the search function.

Feel free to PM me here on the board with any additional questions, or I'd be happy to give you my phone number if you want it, via PM.

Added note: I too considered an initial phone consult, but instead went ahead and visited him in person. I imagine you can get a decent feel for him from a phone consult, but IMHO you get a real sense of him and his office setup and support staff by visiting. Plane schedules were such for me that I could do a day trip into and out of Laguardia, and at least at that point, plane fares weren't that expensive. Advance scheduling for an in office visit and for a phone consult were about the same. If you are concerned about size, which many are, he can show you directly during a visit what you can expect, and also give you a sense for how easy or difficult an implant will be in your particular case, especially if he does a sonogram during your initial in person consult.

I had Dr Eid do my implants this past Monday. His staff is over the top when it comes to dealing with them and insurance companies. Dr Eid himself made me feel very comfortable throughout the process. He used to do seminars every other month at his office, but even on his website the next date for that is two years old. As you're out of town that doesnt help you much. I know he is scheduled for an "extended vacation" soon. He is takng my stictches out next Thursday, I assume I won't see him for 3-4 weeks after that for the "go ahead". While we live close ( 80 miles out on Long Island) it was still a 3 hour trip to get into the hosptial for the procedure. He cut me lose at around 4 PM, so we were in and out same day from 9 AM to about 4 PM.
At this point I would highly recomend him, even though we still have a few more steps to complete the process.
I am 4 days post op and my only complaint is that I am walking around with a half hardon ( to keep scar tissue from forming) I feel like a 13 year old after having been stuck behind "the babe" in school all day. I didnt take any pain meds today, but I am going to drop a few now as we have a sociall gig we have to do tonight. FWIW, I've told friends and family that I had a cyst removed from a "delicate spot" hence the old man way of walking. No one pushed it and I do ride a motersickle, told them I wanted to get it done in the off season. Seems to be working.
Any other questions please feel free to PM me or e-mail at flanaganspoint@aol.com

ps, as an addition and fwiw, I feel like a new man. Knowing that in a monthI'll I be getting wood like I havent had in years.Almost like I am coming out of a depressed state.

Gerry

Dr Eid is one hell of a surgeon and he will tell you that. He is caring and his staff is terrific. He will answer your call personally within a reasonable time and that is crucial if you have any problems. You are in good hands as the others have stated. He may do 4 of these surgeries a week! If you are traveling to have this done, he is the one who will do the best job. There is a very competent surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic in Ft Lauderdale who you could possible use.
