Hernia surgery after implant

Postby Kurt0726 » Thu May 06, 2021 6:36 pm

Anyone have a hernia surgery after being implanted? I have had a titan touch for the past year and now have a hernia. I recently was diagnosed with an inguinal hernia which needs to be repaired. I have read Several horror stories on here about implants no longer working after hernia surgery. I am hoping my hernia can be repaired without compromising the implant. Any advice guidance, experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all

I haven't, but word of advice: get with your IPP surgeon and get as much info as possible on your reservoir positioning and everything, before surgery. Then make sure you tell the hernia surgeon about the implant and reservoir and show them any info you got from the IPP surgeon. Have them discuss the implant location and it may minimize the danger of implant damage. It might even be worth it to see if the two surgeons could be in the OR together.

Kurt,
I’m having a consult with a surgeon tomorrow on an umbilical hernia. I had my implant in Dec 2017 and a revision just this past March. Previously, I’ve had a colon resection and a prostatectomy, both laparoscopic. I will advise what I learn.

Thank you guys on your advice/experiences. I had a cat scan back in February, for an unrelated issue, which should indicate where all the parts are located. Also knowing where the hernia is I don't believe any of the parts are in the way. It seems like the hernia repair could easily avoid the tubing reservoir ETC. But I can't help but be extremely worried

Well keep in mind that the reservoir is placed by using blunt dissection and following the inguinal path that the spermatic cord and blood vessels to the testicles go into the scrotum from the groin. Essentially the surgeon CREATES a small inguinal hernia to place the reservoir. If the repair is of that very same hernia that was created by the IPP implantation, there is significant risk to the implant unless everyone is exactly on point and knows what they need to know before the surgery.

I was an "Outty" for the first five years of my life and told my mother I didn't want to be a freak with no belly button when they started talking surgery to correct my umbilical hernia at 5 years old. My mother pushed the military doctors and they ended up bringing in a plastic surgeon and allegedly performed the first occurrence of my navel repair - umbilical hernia repair and stitching the back side of my "outty" skin to pull it inward, my theory is with some sort of drawstring stitch, and attached it to my abdominal muscles.

The results is that for the past 55 years I've had a very realistic and passible "inny" navel.

That is terrifying. I mean my hernia is on the right side and my reservoir is on the left. I do not believe it is the same hole causing the hernia.

In your case I would agree. That was not mentioned when you said you had an inguinal hernia so my obvious assumption was that it was probably the same location.

In your case just be cautious and make sure your surgeon knows about the implant and if you have any scans or other info that could be helpful to the surgeon to avoid it, be sure to provide it.

Keep in mind too, I'm not a doctor. I'm just an ordinary guy who tries to understand as much as I can about subjects that have I have a vested interest in such as my IPP and how it was installed.

EDIT: Just had an after-though. Did your revision get a new reservoir as well as the pump or is it using the same reservoir that Dr. Perito installed? If you received a new reservoir, perhaps the old one is the source of the hernia now?

I had an ileguial hernia repaired 4 months after the IPP, at the same university hospital as the IPP. I told the surgeon to walk over to urology and talk with my IPP surgeon before she operated on me. Everything came out fine.
