How long can you make the penile implants of today last?

Postby HazelEyes » Wed Jun 02, 2021 11:58 pm

Even assuming you had to get revisions, how many revisions do you think you could get before it got risky? Would it only get harder to get implants after the first 10 years?

Welcome to the forum, HazelEyes.

For me, speculating on the service life of an implant was a non-issue.

It came down to this single question on these 5 points:

1) I cannot have sex now and there is no prospect for an actual cure to my E.D.

2) If/When the operation or the implant fails, I will be no worse off than I am now. (whether it never works, works for a month, a year, a decade or the rest of my ife, requiring revisions or not)

3) If/when the implant fails, a revision is a possibility

4) If the implant succeeds, I can once again have erections (to bolster my self-image) and have erections (to have satisfying to my lover and me).

5) The implant is not a cure. It is a treatment. But this treatment is the closest thing we have to a functional cure.

When I found that an implant was available to me, I did not hesitate one minute. I did spend a very long time and a lot of effort to find the best surgeon (VERY important!) for me and in the meanntime educate myself fully so I would be an informed and participatory patient.

How long might it last? One good sexual encounter would be worth it. An implant WILL render you 100% impotent, but if you are at or near enough that point anyway, the service life is a non-issue in my mind.

Think of it this way:

The example of a man with a bum leg who can hobble through a mile run in 45 minutes, but amputate and replace the leg with a prosthesis and he can do that mile in 10 minutes (not world-class running but a lot better than he could do before). But the leg, if it breaks and he will be in a wheelchair. Parallel this with a penile implant. No sex, or extremely bad sex, but remove the corpus cavernosum to insert an implant and he can have sex almost as good as when he was intact and fully capable. But if the implant breaks, he is in a wheelchair....until he gets a replacement implant.

So, my choices were to continue with crippled sex (fellatio still worked and cunnilingus sufficed) or go for the implant for assisted sex more like natural. A choice unaffected by expected service life of the prosthetic.

I asked dr eid about this because i am young. He said there will be no issue and i can get as many revisions from i need as long as they are from a good doc with low infections.

If you see the signatures of most members you’ll find out that the average lifespan is around 5/6 years. That said, there are many researches saying that 80% of implants are still working after 10 years and 70% are still working after 15 years. Imo the average lifespan is longer than the one you can deduct from this forum because basically most people that are fine do not log into this forum, so you do not hear from them. Then you also have to consider how much you use your implant, ofc the more you use it, the more likely you’ll need a revision sooner.
Another thing to consider is that the data we have is not from the latest generation of implants, thus if you get implanted today your implant should last more wrt implants that have been implanted 10 years ago.
To make it short .. I think that if you get implanted today and you are not unlucky, you can get easily 9-10 years from your implant, which is not so much but enough to have pretty good fun.

Like all things medical, it's pretty much a crapshoot. My Titan lasted 12 years, even though it was never used and was inflated only a few times a year. If you're lucky, yours may last 10 or 15 years; if not, it may quit after a few months. But neither of these extremes should affect your decision. It's a chance worth taking.

This is a little bit of survivorship bias. By in large, the guys who come to this sight come here because of issues that pop up. I've been in contact with a # of guys here who recently got implanted, and 80% of them have been doing great and just have not returned to the site yet to update everyone.

My doc does 300+ per year, yet, I have only seen 2-3 people here mention his name. He says he will be very very upset if I do not get at least 15-20 years out of my first implant.

What I meant more specifically is once it would fail, does the average person have a chance to get a revision or is that it? It's hard to find studies talking about people with long term penile implants and multiple revisions over decades.

Since your penile implant eventually failed, would you be suitable to get a revision? Ignoring that you personally never choose to use it.

I think I was trying to ask a more semantic question, like statistically how many men are capable of getting a revision after receiving an implant? How many studies are there on dudes who have had multiple revisions over multiple decades?

In most cases I've read on here it seems the implant leaves people with less sensation in their penis and less ability to orgasm. If an implant failed and you were only 30 something years old and weren't fit for a revision, seems like you're a lot worse off than before and you still have many decades of enduring the regret of that decision. At least before you would of still been able to feel your penis and orgasm as awkward as that would of been.

I don't have ED but I've thinking about what I would do if I did get it one day and the revisions required for penile implants seem to instill a lot of uncertainty in my decision to consider that option since I don't know how many revisions a person is capable of withstanding before their penis basically breaks.

My reply to this is similar to a previous answer; If your penis can't get erect to perform it's nothing but a watering hose. Yes once you're implanted all the hope of a natural erection is gone. A revision simply replaces the parts that are already there, in my view like putting a new inner tube in a tire.

Since you are only looking for future possibilities, the future should hold advancements in implants. So asking what a current implant life span is won't be any help in 10, 20 or 30 years down the road.
