Aussie looking at implant, wondering about cost

Postby Clem_fandango » Wed Jul 27, 2022 6:00 am

I've had a consultation with Dr Katelaris and am considering an implant. Are there any Aussies who can give me an idea of out of pocket costs? Private message is fine, not after anyone's specific details, just want to get a bit of an idea.
Thanks.

Try to visit a high volume implant surgeon in Australia.

Dr Chris Love is the best in Australia and does about 75 implants a year. He is located in Melbourne.

Fortunately, most health insurance plans cover quite a bit in Australia, I guess because it's such a relatively rare procedure, have you called your health insurance?

How did you find his volume out? It's really difficult to get that info.

I thought Australia had same health service as UK, in which case it should be free.
Try and find out if you have reciprocal healthcare in place with uk ,that way you could come to london and have it done by Ralph.

Hi Clem,
I had my original implant with Dr K and a revision 8 months ago. I had no problems with the surgery and outcomes, Dr K did very good work. The out of pocket costs were in the region of A$8000. My private health insurance covered the hospital costs and Medicare covers the cost of the implant.
2011 RP, nerve sparing 1 side, Gleeson score 7. Injections with Caverject 5mgm caused severe pain, Trimix resulted in PD. Implant 2014 AMS LGX 18cm +2cm rte. Revision 2021, AMS LGX 18cm + 2cm rte

I got quoted $8000 by Dr Eric Chung in Brisbane, rebate from health fund is estimated at $1150 which I believe includes the medicare rebate (I was told it's 75% medicare and 25% BUPA). I was surprised as that leaves $6850 out of pocket, I thought medicare/BUPA would cover more.

Waiting to get a quote from Dr. K to see what hcf will cover. Might be worth getting a quote from Dr Love and Dr Chung too and see if it's worth the flight. Seen all their names pop up on FT from time to time.
Thank for the help all.

You mean this? "

Code: Select all

"Dr Love is the most experienced penile implant surgeon in Australia, and is one of only about 50 surgeons worldwide who regularly performs more than 75 penile implants per year."

It used to not say that.

It's difficult because I was asking a referring urologist about Surgeons, including Dr Love, and couldn't get much information from them about the number of surgeries done in Australia, which surgeon speciialises the most in implants...etc

One Urologist said he didn't know Dr Love, except only from advertisements. This struck me as odd, but then I realised just about every high volume surgeon advertises.
