Had my consult with Dr. Karpman

Postby JDavid » Fri May 31, 2013 9:35 am

Yesterday I met with Dr. Karpman in Mountain View, California. It was a very positive experience. He is personable, funny, and very direct. He considers me to be a good candidate and we have a date set for June 25th. Now I just need insurance approval. He spent a good bit of time and actually showed me both AMS and Coloplast units and explained the reasons he prefers AMS. He demonstrated how the Coloplast unit sticks straight out and noted that my intentions might be misconstrued in the gym showers. He also showed me how pointed the tips are on the Coloplast, hence pain when pumped up. His plan is to have me pumping it "as much as possible" after one week. I expected he would recommend the CX but instead he wants to use the LGX, which he said would result in growth over time with regular use.
We talked about me being gay and he brought up the need for stronger erections. He said he has lots of gay patients and made several good-natured comments. I am convinced he is very gay-friendly, which is very important.
A number of years ago I had a ruptured testicle and now have a testicular prosthesis. After some discussion, we decided that he would remove the testicular prosthesis and replace it with the pump. The tubing will go up the inguinal canal to the reservoir. There will be an overnight stay in the hospital. Surprisngly, he said I can drive myself home.
That's all for now.
I am sixty-six years of age and dealing with gradually worsening ED for twenty years. At sixty-three I wanted something that worked reliably. I got an AMS 700 LGX implant in 6/25/13. I am entirely pleased with the outcome. My surgeon was Dr. Karpman.

Good luck with your impending implant. I'm gay too and I agree that it's wonderful and even necessary to have a good gay friendly surgeon. Mine is great about it and I can talk to him about whatever I need to. I was also worried about the strength of the implant for anal sex so I posted a thread on here back in feb. in Implants called Anal Sex with an Implant and got a bunch of great responses from guys on here who said that I could put it thru a piece of sheetrock if I wanted to, it was so hard. It convinced me... ;) I ended up with a CX as my surgeon thought it was the best choice for me. I'm sure the LGX will work well for you too. I hope everything continues to go smoothly for you. Sounds like you got a great guy to work with.

All the best,
Steve

Thanks for your replies, Rich and Steve. I haven't gotten insurance approval yetbut hopefuly will this next week. Dr. karpman said he was not worried as I work for a large university system. I feel very confident about his skills as a surgeon and also about his intentions. It is my opnion that there is still a lot of anti-gay bias out there and that I ahve experienced it from physicians, especially in relation to matters pertaining to sexuality.
