Distant Surgery Center

Postby rudyjo » Thu Jul 18, 2013 9:46 pm

I'm considering having my penile implant performed by a high volume surgeon and
team which is about 5 hours away from my home.

My concern is the post op care or issues if they arise when I return home.
I'd like to hear from men and their experiences who had their surgery done at a good distance from their home.
Did you go to your urologist for a follow-up visit?
What about deflation/inflation of the implant?

I would very much appreciate your advice.

I had mine done 2 hours away, in the Texas Medical Center. They are high volume.
Trust me, you WANT to leave the catheter in until the next day and return to the hospital to have them take it out - or hire a nursing service to overnight with you at a hotel and take it out 24 hours after.
No way would I take that 5 hour trip until post-op day 4.
Shell out the cash and get comfy and get nurses and be sure you're taken care of.
I had my surgery at 39, I'm healthy & fit and this surgery knocked me on my butt for 4 days straight.

These days, when patients are "customers" and have the ability to shop on-line, it's common and probably expected to travel to get the procedure done by one of the best people in the world. For me I went to a guy Kramer in Baltimore who is superb, but I think Eid and Perito cater to out of town patients too. Hundreds of blogs about these 3 guys. No harm in taking a week off, going somewhere special to get it done. My only complaint (minor one) was that he gave me no real option other than the Coloplast, it might have been nice to see the LGX too. Worked out so I'm happy. TR

I had mine done by doctor Kramer in Baltimore. That was just under 2 hours from my house. I think that I could have gone about 2.5 hours or so but not much more than that on my way home. I would break it up into a 2 day trip at least after I was released. I barely moved off the couch that first week. Really had trouble going anywhere that required cloths because I could not make everyone happy until he deflated me fully. Then I was much more mobile after that. Kramer is the most personable specialist I have ever met. Worth the trip.

rudyjo,

You can see a few notes from my experience travelling about 1000 miles here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1308 . Also gerryp and NE_Bob travelled a distance. You can use the advanced search to search for their comments. Many others have travelled good distances, though I only remember the id's of these other two since they used the same Dr as I did. Wading through the archives here, or perhaps with creative use of the advanced search function, you can find other experiences.

In my case, my Dr was a well known high volume surgeon who had quite a few out of town (and some out of the country) patients, and the Dr and his staff were well prepared to help and advise what would be needed for distance travel. I would assume other well known higher volume surgeons would be similar, so I would suggest you talk to your chosen Dr about travel considerations.

Good luck to you!
