Seeking Advice on Penile Prosthesis Brands and Future Prospects: A 33-Year-Old's Journey

Postby YC1990 » Thu Oct 05, 2023 3:11 pm

Hello everyone,

I am 33 years old and in the coming months, I will be undergoing a penile prosthesis procedure. I have been dealing with ED for the past 2 years due to a penile trauma that resulted in venous leakage. I previously underwent venous ligation surgery, which unfortunately was unsuccessful. I now know that a penile prosthesis is my last option, and I am in the process of scheduling the implantation.

I would like to seek your recommendations on the appropriate brand for a 33-year-old healthy man. My surgeon has suggested the AMS LGX, but the Coloplast TITAN is also an option. The surgeon mentioned that these new implants can last 15-20 years or more. Can anyone confirm if this is accurate? I've come across instances on this forum where people reported failures within a few years. Are these cases exceptions? Which brand tends to have a better lifespan?

It's evident that medical devices are continuously improving. As a 33-year-old, I anticipate needing more than one surgery in the future. While we can't predict the future, what are your thoughts on advancements in devices over the next 10 or 20 years?

Thank you.

I am 46 and just got implanted with AMS 700 on 9/26/2023. The process hasn't been too bad or painful. I think both brands are pretty comparable to each other. Pretty sure it's the difference between driving a Ford or a Chevy. I would leave that up to my doctor and what he/she thinks is the right one for you.
Married 46 year old man.
Pills worked great for 9-10 years.
Trimix with no results to speak of.
Diabetic doctor suggested an implant.

Congratulations on your recent penile prosthesis implantation! I'm glad to hear that the process has been relatively pain-free for you. Given our relatively young ages, have you started considering potential future surgeries or long-term plans?

I have not really thought of the long-term plans. I will see where I and my wife are once this prosthesis runs its course. I figure there is another implate surgery in my future and by then I am guessing it will not be a manual pump but ran off Bluetooth more than likely according to my doctor. I am just waiting for my follow-up on Oct 26. to either start cycling or to start having sex.

I don't have the hard stats but I'd think 15-20 years is not at all typical for an implant lifespan. I also wouldn't count on a massive amount of future device improvement. These implants have been around for several decades and have gone through rounds of improvement already

Thank you for sharing your perspective!
I hope there will be further advancements in the future that positively impact the lifespan of these devices.

I’ve had mine since 2019, so 4 years so far no issues with it.

I have the AMS CX model, some guys swear by one or the other. Both have there pluses and minuses.

My surgeon preferred AMS, but does both.

Personally I think my CX is the best out there.

I'll address your question as to reliability. I can't quote the statistics but AMS implants reportedly out number Titans by a wide margin. Get a notepad & look through past posts & count which brand was replaced by a revision. Be sure to make a note of the members name so that frequent posters don't get counted more than once.
If possible see if the internet will reveal the number of each brand that are installed each year. Use that percentage to put your revision numbers into perspective. I'm sure that you'll get your reliability question answered.
Now on to which is best? Despite all the wild claims about hardness. Both brands are entirely capable of producing an erection that is better than your youthfull erections & will last way longer than any natural erection.
Now to my opinion. Even if you get the absolute maximum hardness implant. Most men inflate to less than max because the woman in their life doesn't like it that hard. At least not consistently that hard.
Out of the three popular models, LGX,
CX & Titan. The Titan while claimed to be the hardest is also the worst for dog ears. Even the CX is not immune to this but at a lower level. Trust me, dog ears can be painfull & there is a chance that the implant will never soften up enough to eliminate the dog ear problem.
Do your own research, consult with your surgeon. I would advise you to do your own research & find an implant that suits your vision of what you want. Be realistic. There is a chance that you might visit a dr that only implants one brand. That isn't a problem if that is what you want. If he doesn't use the brand that you want. Don't be afraid to pick a different dr as long as he is very well trained & experienced.

Dr. Clavell told me on my follow up considering my relatively young age and he would expect me to get a good bit of usage maybe 6-7 years lifespan..

Not great to hear.

my surgeon compared ams and coloplast to mercedes vs. bmw. Both have advantages/disadvantages that should be considered for YOUR specific needs/goals. Dr. Clavell has a good video on youtube that discusses this. I had Titan but ultimately revised to AMS CX and happy with the end result. Appreciate surgeons that offer and feel comfortable with both implants, rather than lining their pockets with $$$ from one brand vs another.
Radical Prostatectomy in 2015; failed pills, straight to Coloplast Titan in 2019 by Dr. Valenzuela in NYC, Replaced with AMS 700 CX in 2022 by Dr. Darshan Patel in San Diego, CA. Wish I jumped to an implant even before prostate cancer!
