Pump placement concerns

Postby Shueswim » Wed Nov 22, 2023 1:18 pm

I am 10 days post-op and everything is going well. Very little pain...except that the pump keeps gravitating to a position to the right - behind my right testicle. When move around it rubs the the testicle and causes pain. If I carefully manipulate it I can get the pump to a position in the middle of my scrotum but it quickly moves back to the right. Even when I get it to the middle temporarily it's so close to my right testicle that I can't imagine trying to squeeze the pump without some real pain when it comes time to start cycline. Anyone else had this issue? Is it something that resolves itself in time or should I be concerned. My surgeon is 2 hours away my first follow-up isn't for another 3 weeks. Any guidance anyone has would be appreciated.

Hi Shueswim: I had a distinct, sharp pain near my right testicle that was present from the very first day that I removed the post-surgery bandaging. My pump was also positioned just to the center-rear of my right testicle in what I, at the time, thought was a very high position that would not promote easy access to the pump. I also had quite a bit of swelling in the scrotum that made me think there was no way that I could ever successfully reach and manipulate the pump without pain. The first couple weeks when the procedure is brand new and we don't know what to expect can be a difficult time when every different sensation can send us off into endless speculations of what this or that symptom can possible mean to the success or complication of our recent surgery. I found that, at the 4 week mark, most of these symptoms began to resolve themselves despite my misgivings or worries. I know it's hard but hang in there for a few weeks until your body adjusts to the implant before you start to analyze what the symptoms may mean. Best of luck in your recovery!

My pump is also nestled in behind the right testicle. It's no problem at all because, for me at least, the testicles are very mobile. When I first grab the pump, the right testicle is nearby, but I just sort of shift things a bit before I start squeezing. The location seems perfect now that I'm used to it. I know right where it is and everything just works. But I suppose if the pump were somewhere else, I'd probably have gotten used to that as well.

For the first many weeks after surgery my scrotum was really swollen and unhappy, especially the right ball. I don't know why, but the doctor said the tissues were unusually inflamed and the right ball felt sort of adhered to the pump. As a result, I couldn't really figure out how to "pull down on the pump" like the doc told me to do. All of this was worrisome to me, but the swelling eventually went down and now everything is normal, just like the doctor said would happen.

For what it's worth, I do a one-handed squeeze with the pump between the fingers and palm of the right hand. The pump is perfectly positioned for that, although I can use left hand to if I want.

My doc said just leave it alone. No pointing up, no pulling pump down, nothing at all. Just leave it alone to heal.Came out perfect.
