RogerM Coloplast Titan recipient

Postby RogerM » Tue Mar 18, 2014 1:54 pm

My name is Roger. I’m a 59 y.o. with Type II diabetes and ED. I was diagnosed with both about 10 years ago. I tried the usual medications – Viagara, Levitra & Cialis and they all worked for a while then stopped being effective. About 2 yrs. Ago I got a Pos-T-Vac vacuum pump and it really helped me to achieve a nice erection but even with a very tight constrictor band (cock ring), I couldn’t maintain the erection for more than a couple of minutes. I had to stop what I was doing and re-pump every few minutes. My girlfriend didn’t seem to mind but I knew things could be much better.
This past Thursday, March 13th, I had a Coloplast Titan installed at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Bruce Garber was the surgeon & as far as I’m concerned he is top-notch. He did a super job! I live outside of Atlanta, GA so it was no short trip to Philadelphia but I decided after reading about implants and outcomes that I wanted a surgeon who does a lot of these operations & Dr. Garber has done in excess of 2,000 implant operations. He also developed a technique he uses to help make sure he puts the largest size implant in there to help preserve penis length and that was very important to me also. The staff at Hahnemann were all very friendly, professional & very competent as is Dr Garber’s staff.
I left the hospital after the operation with a urinary catheter and a drain tube. The drain tube was no problem & is probably the reason I never had any discoloration but the catheter was painful. It didn’t hurt as long as I was still but when I walked around every step caused the tube to rub against the inside wall of my urethra. That night I sat up in bed because I couldn’t roll on either side. I don’t think I slept a wink. The next morning, I went to Dr Garber’s office and he removed the catheter and the drain. I was so afraid the removal of the catheter was going to be excruciating but it hardly hurt at all.
I’m now 5 days post-op and have no swelling or discoloration and very little pain. I finished the last of my oral antibiotic (Bactrim) today. I think it’s the cause of a little stomach discomfort – nothing too bad. As far as pain – there hasn’t been much. I took a Percocet the night of the operation. I took nothing prior to seeing Dr Garber the next day because I hadn’t eaten and I wasn’t sure how much pain I would be in following the removal of the catheter and the drain. After I left Dr Garber’s office, I took 2 Tylenol Extra Strength caplets. I switched down to 1 Tylenol ES twice a day the following day & I’ve been at that level ever since. I take it as much for the anti-inflammatory benefits as the pain relief.
Dr Garber normally sees his post-op patients the day after surgery, 2 weeks post and 6 -8 weeks post. Because I live so far from Philadelphia, I don’t have to come up for the 2 week visit. I will call his office and presumably get instructions on inflating and deflating the cylinders. I will come back up 8 weeks post-op to meet with him and get permission to begin using this new device. I can’t wait.
I strongly recommend Dr Garber and his staff. His website is http://www.garber-online.com. I think he’s the best!
By the way, I learned a lot from the guys who’ve taken the time to relate their experiences here on franktalk.org and I look forward to being able to give-back. Thank you.

This is Roger with a slight correction. I mentioned in my original post that I had no discoloration. I took a shower a few minutes ago & in the process of cleaning my undercarriage, I noticed there is a lot of discoloration on the bottom half of my scrotum.

Blue/black is really starting to appear on my scrotum by day 8, but not as bad as some pictures I have seen of others. Lots of trauma down there in surgery so I was expecting bruising.

Two-Week Anniversary

It's been two-weeks now since my operation. The incision site (horizontal infrapubic) seems to be healing well; no sign of redness or pain at that site. I have only two small complaints:

I'm comfortable sitting and lying down but my scrotal area aches after standing for more than a couple of minutes. The ache goes away after I return to sitting or lying down. I guess it's just the extra weight and the internal wounds are still sensitive. Is this common?

Occasionally my scrotum itches. I showered just prior to bedtime last night. I fell asleep around 10 PM; woke up to pee around 3 AM & had a lot of itching down there. I guess it's just the hair starting to grow back but it was so bad I had a difficult time returning to sleep. Possibly washing with soap just prior to bedtime may have helped to dry out the skin on the scrotum which may have aggravated the situation. I know there are products like Aloe & Lanacane that might help but don't want to do anything with MD consultation. Any of you guys experience this?

All in all, though, I'm really happy! I spoke with the MD, Dr Bruce Garber, & made appt to see him to get instructions on pumping up 8 weeks post-op. 8 weeks post-op seems like a long time to begin pumping-up but if that's his recommendation then it's good enough for me.

I to had Dr. Garber do a Titan for me back in Aug. of 2010. He did a great job and I am enjoying my favorite organ again. You have a lot of healing ahead of you. Pain free intercourse took 6 to 8 months and even then I could not go for long sessions without pain in the tip of the Glans. All I can say is patience patience patience. Tylenol will help with this. Also it takes longer for me to orgasm but I think that might be from the prostatectomy I had in 2008. I'm a little less sensitive but I can still get there with a lot of stimulation. Orgasms when they occur are more intense then before the prostatectomy. Good luck with your recovery and if you have any questions by all means ask.

Three Week Anniversary

It's been 3 weeks since my implant operation. The pain is really minimal; I still have some aching in the scrotal area where the pump is resting when I'm on my feet but the aching doesn't hurt quite as much as it did before & I can easily tolerate it. I have 1 more week before I return to work & I must stand on my feet during work so hopefully pain will go down even more before I return to work. I still take (1) 200 mg Advil tablet with breakfast & another with dinner every day; I'll probably discontinue that within next week. I still have some itchiness on scrotal surface where pump rests but since pain is nearly gone it's much easier to reach down & scratch it (unless I'm out in public then I have to be discrete). LOL. All in all, I'm doing really good. I'm looking forward to seeing the surgeon again during week 8 post-op to get instructions on pumping-up and looking forward to trying it out.

Roger,

First of all, congratulations on your new Titan Implant.
I was implanted with the Coloplast Titan in December 2007 after developing ED Post-Prostatectomy in February 2004.
The Implant completely corrected my ED and restored both my sex life and the emotional bond with my wife.
Also, as a Coloplast Patient Educator, I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with Dr. Garber while I was participating in an ED Seminar in Philadelphia several months ago.
I also had the opportunity to speak with several of his Titan Implant patients and they all gave him five star reviews.
Roger, I wish you a lifetime of enjoyment with your Titan Implant.

Bob
