Had surgery yesterday with Dr. Patel at the La Jolla Jacobs Center. Overall the day of surgery was very smooth, he had let me know in the morning that we may start 30 minutes later than anticipated since the first surgery of the day was a little more involved. dr. Patel was cool and reassuring prior to the surgery and made be feel very hopeful. Surgery took about 1 hour based on the notes. I was implanted with AMS CX 21 + 1 cm on both sides.
This morning was rough - getting woken up by nurses, IV's for the antibiotics, foley being removed which was terrifying. The doc that saw me in the morning, wasn't very detailed, just said things looked good and then she was gone. Didn't see the surgeon this morning.
Got a call from the surgeon around 10 am and spent 20 minutes talking to me about the surgery, what he found. Sounds like it was pretty textbook and he opted for the CX implant, which I'm now glad about. Said he usually is at another hospital on thursday so unable to come in to see me, but the trainee doctors are his eyes/ears and believes in on the course for speedy recovery.
Looking down below there is some puffiness around the up and down incision on the scrotum, but not too swollen or bruised at all. Much less than I was expected. No drain was placed at surgery. Was able to pee this morning and it didn't feel great - ton of spraying. I do have some partial hard-on which the doctor said he left implant 30% inflated.
I feel somewhat excited after my conversation with the doctor, but also a little anxious - seriously I just got a bionic penis installed.
I'm trying to ice like crazy, but my mind is just running like crazy.

Congratulations! Sounds like it went well. Its gonna hurt from here on out - and you are going to ask yourself what the hell did you just do! It's OK. Things WILL get better. I'm almost 7 weeks in (just past 6.5 weeks) and life is finally getting back to normal. I CAN penetrate - though it doesn't feel good quite yet (painful due to healing / adjusting) but you'll get there. I too have the CX - and from my own experience it does look pretty natural (check my journal for pics) all things considered.
Best of luck to you on your healing journey!

Congrats! I'm 2 years in here and I haven't forgotten how it went in early recovery. It will all pass before you know it. Ice and meds. Cycle, cycle, and more cycling and before you know it you'll be well on your way. Healing takes time. GL to ya.

Re: Day 1 after Surgery - Freaking Out!
Ballhog,
I have an appointment with Patel next month. I was wondering; did the procedure take place
in the hospital or surgery center ? Did you say over night ? Also; did Patel do the surgery, one
of the interns or both ?
Thanks

Thanks all for support. Thinking I'm turning a corner today. Focusing on the heat. Its sore but not painful. Able to get around the house and all.
Looking below the belt, actually looks pretty good for only being 30% inflated, somewhat excited for the clearance day when I can start using this bad boy.

Patel works out of a surgery center and a hospital, but depends on your insurance (or if cash) Since it all went through my insurance, I wanted to stay overnight under observation, still considered outpatient surgery per insurance standards. I have BCBS of california and reasonable deductible. I think it depends on insurance and your own preference. He offered to send me home the same day, which he says 60% of patients do, the rest prefer to stay since they may be traveling to the area and hospital is as nice as hotel (nice big room, pretty nice distant ocean view, decent food).
In terms of trainees, I did ask about this beforehand. He told me that he has an assistant for the surgery (surgical tech or a resident, no students), but he does the entire surgery himself. The resident doctors do help with the other paperwork stuff, esp if your spending the night. He was standing next to me, when they were putting me to sleep and the anesthesia doc asked me to count backwards from 10 and next thing I know I was awake after the surgery and the surgeon was actually helping me move off the operating room table.

BH47,
Thanks for your input. As I will be coming from OR and traveling alone; I might just spend the night in the hospital.
