Surgery Scheduled March 25

Postby kjcustoms » Thu Feb 05, 2026 2:11 pm

Just scheduled my surgery with Dr. Patel in San Diego - are there things that you would recommend that you did before surgery or things that you knew?

I was told to give at least 6 weeks of regular vacuum use before surgery. He also told me to eat higher protein diet and watch simple sugars.

Are there special things I need to buy?

The pre-op shopping list is long, but maybe not necessary. Lots of suggestions here on FT and from your surgeon, but everyone's experience is different.

One surgeon ( who i didn't go with) said wash with surgeons hand wash for 3 days before surgery. I did that.

I had to buy a bottle of gatorade. Drink it the morning of surgery, that was my surgeons requirement to balance my hydration.

Ice packs. I have 2 in my freezer. Never used them. Woke up from anaesthesia with an ice pack between my legs, replaced it once. but that was it.

Special underwear to hold penis up. I found pouch underwear I already had worked better for me.

Baby socks to minimise glans pain. Didn't need them. Maybe the pouch underwear did the same job.

I also bought a bottle of bio-oil. Used it before. It really helps healing and minimise scaring.

And I needed to buy pyjamas for the hospital. I dont normally wear them.

The take away is I spent several hundred on preparing things I didn't use, but once you come out of the hospital you aren't going to be rushing down to the shops, and far too late to be ordering online. so better to be prepared than not.
ED since my 40s, managed by pills.
Increasingly severe BPH, emergency HoLEP prostatectomy Nov 2021.
Fixed the prostate but pills slowly became less and less effective.

Patel is an AMS guy as far as I know. Did you discuss both implants with him and how did you arrive at your final choice?
55 years. Using bimix 0.4 units. Works well but inconsistent and very inconvenient. Seriously considering an implant. 6.4 inches bone pressed length to tip, 5 inches girth base, 4.5 inches girth mid-shaft.

i think he mostly does AMS but does a fair number of Coloplast Titan too. We discussed whether it made sense to go from Titan to AMS or just remain with Titan for my revision.
62 year old, ED+PD, Coloplast Titan 22 cm no RTE in 2019 with Dr. Irwin Goldstein => failure, now with plaque excision/tunical expansion to Coloplast Titan 26 no RTE in 2022 by Dr. Darshan Patel, now with classic pump 2024 :D

Your diet definitely will help. I was hungry for weeks after mine so keep high protein grub on hand. We had chicken strips and individual vacuum seal bags of roast in freezer.

Use a bag of popcorn in place of ice.

Baggy pants. Soft material.
Jock straps, ( you will get one at surgery ). just cut a slit in your underwear for when you have to have them on.
I stayed nude during recovery when possible.

Baby socks are a life savor. Not only protects your bionic penis but if you leak it won’t dribble on your floor or get on clothing. HD are thicker than box store.

You will get orders from surgeon to ice for three days. After that I alternated heat pad and ice.

You will be getting lots of ideas just implement what you need.

I probably watched more tv during recovery than I have in the last ten years so have what you want lined up.

This is great!

I think Dr. Patel recommends 2 types of underwear - they are nice but not necessary since so expensive. Any tight underwear with a whole cut out for your penis is great.

I did get these reusable heat packs I could put in the microwave which were helpful especially when learning to cycle.

A plastic urinal was nice to help with the unpredictable urine stream in the first few days.

Ice multiple different ways - I had the ice packs, pop corn kernels, green peas,

Good luck! Send me message with any specific questions.
