Which pump ?

Postby marcsalo » Sun Nov 01, 2026 5:44 pm

I'm scheduled for my AMS 700 implant surgery in December with Dr. Clavell. I'm trying to decide between the MS pump and the Tenacio pump. Has Dr. Clavell stopped using Tenacio, due to the recall a while back? I have seen all of his You Tube vids, describing the pros and cons of the two pumps, and the Tenacio seems easier to inflate and the MS easier to deflate. I appreciate any input as their experience with either pump and if Dr. Clavell prefers one over the other.

Marcsalo, I’ve had my MS pump for 5 years and it works great but it is pretty big and you have to wait for the bulb to refill to get complete full pumps.

The Tenacio pump fills quicker after each squeeze according to Boston Scientific ads. So, it would probably help with getting harder faster.

I’m sure that Dr Clavell has been on top of this issue, with Boston Scientific. I think you can trust his judgement on this, but if you’re uncomfortable with the track history of the new pump, then it’s up to you. I’m sure, Dr Clavell would listen to your concerns.

It's an issue I'm pondering too.

This is what I got when I googled the problem:

• When the problem occurred: Boston Scientific initiated a voluntary product recall on September 11, 2025, for specific serial numbers of the AMS 700™ Inflatable Penile Prosthesis with the TENACIO™ Pump. Reports leading up to this involved manufacturing and mechanical issues affecting proper pump inflation and/or deflation (such as valves releasing pressure prematurely or causing automatic deflation). (USFDA)
• What Boston Scientific did: The company voluntarily initiated a product recall of specific affected lot and serial/model numbers for the preconnected infrapubic and penoscrotal configurations (including various AMS 700 LGX™ and CX TENACIO™ pump units), working with health authorities to track and analyze returned devices in their quality assurance laboratories. (USFDA)

The Core Problems

Analyses from laboratory evaluations and customer experiences with the AMS 700™ TENACIO™ Pump identified a primary mechanical and manufacturing issue:
• Deflation and Inflation Failures: Internal valves failed to pass functional activation testing. In some instances, when a patient pumped the device up to about 70–80% capacity, the internal pressure-regulating valve would release prematurely, causing the cylinders to automatically deflate. (USFDA)
• Sticky Deflation Buttons: A subset of patients noted that the deflation valve required an excessive amount of finger pressure to fully lock into deflation mode, making it difficult to return to a flaccid state. (franktalk)

Was it Fixed?

Yes, the issue was addressed through manufacturing and inventory control measures:
• Removal of Affected Lots: Boston Scientific's voluntary recall on September 11, 2025, targeted specific serial and lot numbers to completely clear the compromised valve blocks from distributor and hospital inventories.

• Quality Control Remediation: Devices manufactured outside of the flagged lots or produced following the quality assurance correction operate as intended, utilizing the distinct separate pathways for inflation and deflation designed for the TENACIO model. (Istanbul Urology Clinic)

I think I'd go with what your surgeon is comfortable with. The recall happened recently. Clavell is known as someone more on a cautious side. Between more conservative and more aggressive, Clavell would probably fall into conservative camp. There are pros and cons with both.

Just surrender to the notion that no matter which direction you go, you'd be taking a risk, and everything should work out fine. There are no better hands in the US than Clavell's. There might be equally good ones but there are no better :)

I presume you're getting CX. Or did you do the impossible and convinced him to give you LGX?
