Titian Infections?

Postby PCHelp76180 » Tue Aug 18, 2015 10:03 am

This is a follow up to my implant string of July 7th. I went back to my Urologist on July 17th with excruciating anal pain and bleeding during BM's. This turned out to be a sphincter fissure just over 1/2 in long. This happens post-op due to the anesthesia and no BM's for three days. In my case the stool softener's weren't enough to soften things sufficiently to prevent tears. Another factor were the pain killers, I literally didn't know I was torn until I was off the pain killers.

So I went in for the repair of the sphincter and the torn muscle on Aug 3rd, healing has been progressing slow which is normal. To anyone who has never experienced this be prepared for a spinal block (very painful) and lots of leakage. They inject Botox into the surrounding muscle to give time for the repairs to heal, hence the "leakage"

Just when I thought I was back on the road to recovery I shocked when taking a shower I felt something itching near the base of my penis and looked down to see what looked like a large pimple, I rubbed it and puss just started to pour out. It drained for about 3 hours, I called the Urologist's emergency number and was sent to the ER. I was sent home with 3 weeks of antibiotics, the early prognosis is it is an superficial skin infection because it is right on the suture line. The blood and culture results will be available in a week. I am really hoping that is the case, as I never experienced any pain or redness, but I did see a bump under the base of the penis and just thought it was part of the extra tubing.

To everyone who has experienced these type of symptoms, what can I expect? Is this a bad sign, will the IPP have to be removed?

it's a good sign that you don't have any pain or redness.
When I asked my doctor what would be a sign of infection, his answers were basically continuous pain in the penis or scrotum, redness and fever.
If the infection is located in the skin, an antibiotic usually will solve the problem. If the infection is deeper and affects the Internal Penile Pump™, then it will need to be removed.
Some doctors go to a salvage procedure, during which the wound is thoroughly washed with antiseptic solutions after device removal and placement of a new implant during the same procedure, has a high success rate and is becoming a popular approach.

Hope it's just a located infection. You are in my thoughts. Hope you all the best.

Thank you avlis26, I have also read in some cases where the entire device is removed, purged, and retry after 6 months of healing.

I don't know if it's true but I have read on other sites that the best thing to do is when replacing the implant is to install the replacement immediately, reason being that the penis will shrink the longer you take to install the replacement implant. Just something to check into before replacing the implant

I had never heard that before jelizondo12. Will defiantly have to bring that up when I see my Dr again.
Thank you

Another information point for you: I had my Titan removed after eight weeks, not (officially) for an infection, but because my scrotum rejected the pump, producing a liquid that had to be drained. And so everything was removed. You can search for my other posts for the unpleasant details.

I wasn't offered a "salvage" option (just my doc's thing, I think), but she hoped to put in the Coloplast Genesis semi-rigid to preserve length; that failing, as she wasn't sure she'd be comfortable when she got inside, I'd have to do vacuum exercises between extraction and next inflatable implant ... exactly for what you're concerned about, to preserve length.

She was able to put in the rods (I can tell you about them if you like but not much to tell) and I'll see her next week to talk of the future. I do know, after previous conversation, that we'll go with AMS this time instead of the Titan.

Thanks chedog, (check your PM's). Did the liquid discharge externally, was there any order? I have my fingers and toes crossed this discharge dries out within a week. If it doesn't they are going to remove it all.

Have replied via PM.

Nothing external, no odor.

My fingers are crossed for you, too. It was a drag to have the setback I had after eight weeks, and now to ne no closer to solving the ED with an implant. Not anxious to go through a third surgery, but I guess I will....

Let us know how it turns out for you.

The follow up visit has been postponed. They told me the drainage should stop in two to three weeks. :(
