How to deal with catheter step by step

Postby alibaba » Thu Mar 02, 2017 4:27 pm

Over the years there have questions about how to remove a catheter.
First let me say, make sure you keep the bag lower than your body so you bladder drains. A full bladder is hard on kidneys and raises blood pressure. This thing will only let me post 3 picture then locks up so this will be in multiple posts.

An alternative way is cut the small hose and let the bulb

Drain the bag in stool. remove catheter over stool as it is common to pee out a little when it comes out. i didn't this time. You can do it over a towel also if unsteady or if it is hard to straddle the stool. The syringe SCREWS onto the little hose nipple. Screw it on all the way and it opens the valve.

Pull out catheter . May burn or hurt. You can stop a second if you need to then pull more. There likely will be as much as 8" to pull out.

This is what the catheter looks like in your bladder, The bulb holds it in. You will draw the saline out of the bulb to deflate it so it looks like the next picture.

Thanks for the informative, realistic and reassuring post, Alibaba.

I might suggest sitting in the (empty) bathtub or shower, perhaps on a chair or stool if spillage or leakage is a concern.

I have bought catheters on eBay for very little money.
Just to prepare for if I ever needed one.
Doctors like to pretend it is a big deal.
They come with instructions and anyone with a high school diploma or less could do it.
I have used it just to see if it as as easy as described.
No problems at all.
The myth of catheter use being a problem is just that, a myth.
Implanted with colorplast Titan 3 years ago. Davinci radical prostatectomy 6 months ago. Very happy with the outcome of both procedures.

Agreed. Some read they are going to a hotel with a catheter and scared about dealing with it so I thought I would post this to help. It is a simple procedure. Cheers.

Im 6 days out and recovering well now. I was in Greenslopes hospital here in Brisbane overnight. When the nurse removed the catheter it really hurt me and the end of the tube had a sharp lump on it, this made my urethra extremely sore . I was not allowed to leave the hospital untill i had emptied my bladder 3 times with an ultrasound scan inbetween. It took me all day to achieve this, meanwhile as the Nurses were handing over to the afternoon shift i overheard them report that i had complained of a sore bladder and was having trouble peeing. I set them strait of course. It was then i realized i was not in a safe situation staying with these incompetent people so as soon as i managed my last pee i left in a hurry. I read my discharge papers when i got home and they were for someone else. I was not allowed any pain meds to take home so the first 24 hours were hell as i had drunk so much water during the day trying to get my bladder empty 3 times.Cheers Ian. 61yo 3 year post radical proststectomy.
