Prostatectomy AFTER Implant

Postby robertm » Wed May 17, 2017 11:40 am

Has anyone had RP after having implant surgery? I've read a lot of posts about guys who have lost penile length due to prostate surgery then had implant surgery based on the new length. If you have prostate surgery AFTER an implant, does that affect the functioning of the implant and would you need revision surgery to accommodate the new, shorter penile length?
60 yrs old. Gradually worsening ED for 10 years. Pills and trimix not working well anymore. Will need an implant in the near future.

robert: Don;t know the post RPP penile shortening comes from removal of the prostatic urethra. Don;t know if they would have to revise the implant to accommodate the shorter urethra. Certainly a topic of discussion for the surgeon

I had RP last February and I can tell you that you will lose at less an inch. So I am sure that something what have to be adjusted. With pump therapy you can get the inch back but it will take a few months

I got my Titan about 2 years before my davinci radical prostatectomy.
I had no loss of length from my prostate removal.
Implanted with colorplast Titan 3 years ago. Davinci radical prostatectomy 6 months ago. Very happy with the outcome of both procedures.

In a prostate cancer support group I was in years back the guys responded that they had all lost an inch after a prostatectomy. Now this was before the introduction of penile rehab, so our penises all were "inactive" for some time after the surgery and I'm sure that atrophy happened. (And by the way, I was the only guy with an implant back then, so I/we were sure that it was the no-rehab prostatectomy that took that inch, not an implant. And I have also heard that some guys who use an implant can regain that inch with frequent inflation. Nice, huh?) ;)

I have read somewhere that the surgeon will ask that the penile implant not be inflated for at least 6 weeks post prostatectomy but as a physician I cant imagine the need for implant revision but only some time for reanastomosis to heal. After that healing inflation should eventually stretch over time and bring penile length back to pre prostatectomy with implant length no need to remove and resize. That said I can imagine that having a reservoir in place can make a urologist uncomfortable doing laparoscopic da Vinci removal versus open radical prostatectomy because of the concerns regarding damaging the reservoir but I am sure there are docs who will do it. Might need to look around.
