tl;dr (too long, didn't read): my ranting opinion about how the bad stories you hear about implant surgeons is, in my uneducated opinion, counterintuitively a reason why you can confidentially trust most any trained urologist.
I'm not offended cause I spew out irrational stuff all the time, lol, but fwiw here I'd suspect that you hearing bad stories about certain other doctors is a case of how the only stories you'd ever hear about them are "bad ones" but that has little to nothing to do with their skills.
I got mine done by my urologist I've been seeing for a few years now. He's never been mentioned here or on google about implants. He's my doctor, I have zero reason to doubt anything. If my surgery went bad and I end up with floppy glans or whatever, I (or at least a lot of people in my situation) would show up here to complain. If it goes good? Why would I ever come here to say anything? "Yep my doctor Steve you've never heard of did a great job with my dick surgery, I recommend!" So you're only ever hearing the rare outliers, that one time something did go wrong.
That's relevant to what I cited earlier:
Patients treated by higher volume implanters are less likely to
require reoperation after inflatable penile prosthesis insertion than those treated
by lower volume surgeons
Less likely? By how much? So, Dr. Rosselló Barbará or Dr. Ralph you would be less likely to have problems. Your regular urologist? Well, slightly more likely. I guess. But common? No.
Dr. Ralph isn't batting .1000 here. And your urologist doesn't have a batting average of .400. It's just a little less likely for them to screw up.
Also,
Penile implants are no exception to this general rule of surgical outcomes; ergo, it may be preferable that penile prosthesis surgery not be performed by “dabblers” but rather by individuals who have had intensive training and/or extensive experience with implant surgery.
Implant surgeries are no exceptions from neck surgery or whatever. A world-class one who does 3 a week gonna have better odds of not screwing up than someone who doesn't. Does that mean there's like a 35% chance of failure with your local one? No, no doctors practicing medicine in America or Europe or wherever else are doing hack jobs. But that one time they did, the outlier, you hear about that.
And keep in mind if a patient of the "world class" ones you all talk about, if a patient does get the floppy glans, what's he gonna do? Come here and yell about how upset he is with the expert? No, he's prob gonna talk to his freaking doctor about it, not you all.
This is kind of the same concept as why media is screwing up our lives and making everyone scared. When you turn on the news you hear and read bad stories all the time, so you think bad stuff is always happening out there in the world. Problem is our world is safer today than it's ever been in history (you can fact check that - you are less likely to get murdered or robbed today than in the 1950s - those times were more dangerous) - the only difference is now we have a 24/7 news cycle that profits off of the shock stories. Russia and Ukraine killing each other now gets more viewers, more ad money, more profit. That triple homicide somewhere 400 miles from you? You hear about it on three social media platforms and the 7 news stations and articles. 1950s happened more often, but you didn't hear about it like we do today.
About all that though, I would never blame anyone for wanting the best-of-the-best for an implant. It's our freaking dicks, so I completely understand how virtually every man would want and desire the best of the best, because...it's our freaking dicks.
It's just my opinion that not trusting my urologist in anything would be wrong. That's why he's a freaking doctor.
Cliffs: Bad implant stories you hear about don't really mean anything. If you talk to your doctor about an implant and they think the procedure is good for you, freaking trust them. Hasn't the older generation always trusted their doctors wholeheartedly while it's the young generations today who base everything they believe off google and what they read online?
What made this clash between generations different?
For the ending: I said earlier I don't actually know anything and am just an idiot with a brain injury who smokes far too much weed and likes to go on tl;dr philosophical rants online before bed, though it's my opinion that believing you need to be flying to different continents for your 45 minute procedure is not warranted.
