Going to surgery alone

I went alone. Wasn't that big of a deal. If you want the surgery going alone is better than waiting till November IMO.

When I go I m going alone.....I m going to travale 6 hrs all the way to Huston Texas. Huber will take me to the surgery center and to my hotel room. I don't see the big deal of going alone. My wife offers but I said no its ok...this is something I ha e to deal with. Are we big boys or what?

Yes, we are big boys. And big boys know when to ask for help where warranted. I had a penoscrotal surgery and having someone else to change my wound dressing was handy. Infrapubic would have been easier to do alone. Going alone represented a risk if something unforeseen happens.

How many have you gone to this surgery alone? More specifically traveling far for the surgery/out of state. And how was that experience? I ask because I have the opportunity to get this surgery next week but don’t have anyone to go with me as my dad who originally was supposed to go has to give his job a two week notice that he will be gone. Other than that I’d have to wait to probably November to get the surgery done but at that time my father would be able to go with me. Should I go alone or wait longer but have my dad go with me?

I don’t mind going alone it’s just my parents are making a huge deal about it. My mom starts telling me horror stories about anesthesia, my father starts complaining about how he can’t miss work. I did not feel scared to go alone until they started putting the fear in my head

Most hospitals will not allow you to take a taxi or Uber home after your surgery,I would advise you to confirm that they will allow it.

Hospitals and/or Surgery Centers often demand you have a driver if any anesthesia is given. The reason is because anesthesia can cause you to suddenly fall asleep for up to 8+ hours afterwards.

Just an opinion. Planning is key. Get your prescriptions filled the day before. Hire a CNA or similar person to escort you back to your hotel. Be sure to be able to pay them & have a modest amount of cash on hand. Make sure your phone is fully charged. Extra charger & cord. Preposition some food. Put some of those single serving microwaveable meals in the freezing compartment. A few of your favorite soft drinks. Knoowing that you have food & drinks are reassuring.
Just don't pack a lot of stuff to the hospital. My wife wanted to drag too much along. If alone, travel light on the day of surgery.
If you feel compelled to buy some medical supplies. Buy them at a big box type store. Save the receipts so you can return what you don't need.
Finally, buy a 100 count bottle of generic ibuprofen & acetaminophen. Those are the only two pain relievers that can be taken at the same time. I'm mildly allergic to ibuprofen but by taking it every other time I didn't have a problem.
Btw, others may disagree with me. I'm sure that your parents love you. But it sounds like in this situation they might be more help at home than with you. They might not be at their best in a stressful situation. No need to be trying to recover & playing referee with them. Just keep a level head. Don't freak out. It all will work out in the end.

Most will not allow a taxi or Uber, either.

If things go well, you’re right, this is no big deal. If there are complications, then you need someone close enough to call on the phone.

I never really had any pain. A week ago we had a recently-operated-on guy in here posting about moderately severe pain at the one week point. He was needing Percocet to deal with it. No two guys are alike.

You’re light years ahead to expect the best but plan for the worst. An escort is like an insurance policy or a gun. You don’t need one, until you need one badly.

It’s a free country, more or less. Do what you want. Looking at the histories of bionic guys on this website, the surgical experience range is from less traumatic than a colonoscopy to more traumatic than a kidney transplant with every variation in between.

Yes, we are grown men, big boys. We are also capable of being stupid. It pays to know yourself. It also helps if you’ve had surgeries before and can predict how you’ll react. My last hernia they didn’t even make me wait for a wheelchair. I walked to parking lot with my wife and a nurse to watch me. But that’s me. The guy in the recovery cubicle next to mine was an hour ahead but he was howling like a stuck pig and demanded a urinal be brought to him, he wasn’t going to walk to restroom (also a hernia).

The overall impact for me was similar to a vasectomy. No big deal. I hate to preach….but you won’t know for sure how this will affect you until you have it done. The only thing I’d worry about is debilitating pain and/or infection. If #1 happens, somebody needs to be with you. If #2 happens a second set of eyes is gonna be useful and somebody to get your ass back to the doc is critical.

GT1956 and I typically agree on most everything. He might even be right about the parents. I also understand you might not want your bionic dick surgery broadcast to everyone you know. But you don’t have a cousin, sibling, friend who can get you to/from hospital (surgical center)? If you’ve prepositioned food, meds, comfortable clothing you sure as heck don’t need round-the-clock care. But someone to take you thru a drive thru for food on the way home, see you into the house and comfortable in bed or on the couch, and then take off. That’s what I had, that’s all I needed.

Mine was not bad and for men who were alone there was an overnight stay. Last to have surgery so I was out well before 24 hours. This let me use the hospitals transportation back to my hotel room. The key is to have cold packs and everything you need so you can stay as flat as possible as much as possible. My overnight stay I was flat and that really helped. Cath was removed the next day but I could have done that myself. I also alternated between Motrin and Tylenol. May have just taken one of each. That was my only pain meds and Motrin really helps with the swelling. That along with staying flat and cold packs. I used bags of dry beans that I had in the hotel in room refrigerator. The meals are easy as there is so much to pick from. Cans of stew or really a lot of different soups. Pasta in cans. PB&J sandwich. Chips. Dry or whole fruit. I would have 3-4 days menu planned out and on hand. Stay as flat as you can for the first 48 hours and then get up a little. I had surgery on Wednesday and was cleared to fly home on Saturday. I stayed until Monday and went out a day early and it cost very little more as I then received a weeks rate discount for my room. My doctors office had already arranged for discounts with the hotel. As I said your doctors office would be the best place to start to get a copy of your discharge instructions and list of everything you will need so you can have it ahead of time. Many of the higher volume doctors are set up for men being alone.
