I don't post my length in my signature line, but I have stated it in a few posts about post-op length. It was an honest measure with a ruler firmly against my pelvic bone and measured to the very end. I suspect others do the same thing, which is the method a doctor will use. Your weight will affect this measurement a bit depending upon the thickness of your pubic fat pad.
I question these studies and the one you link to has this statement attached when viewing the US data "Reliability: Low–moderate — plausible range, but still an aggregated estimate, not a clinical measurement." Additionally, it states the self-reports tend to skew higher. OK, but just who is being measured in a clinical setting? How many are in total are being measured? Is the group large enough to truly represent the total population?
Prior to ED, that's just what I would have wanted to do, go into a clinical setting, get a hard-on and have it measured. You'll never convince me that you'll capture an absolute max length in that setting vs. a hard-on in an erotic situation. As to the Brotherhood on FT who measure themselves, I really don't have a reason to doubt them. In the end, my length is the only length I'm interested in though.
@1sfman fair questions, and you're partly right. The big review (Veale 2015) pooled up to 15,521 men, but only studies where a doctor or nurse did the measuring with a standard method, and at least 50 men per study. The catch is that only around 700 of those were measured erect. Most of the data is flaccid or stretched.
And your point about the clinic setting actually shows up in the numbers. The biggest US study where men measured themselves at home (Herbenick 2014, 1,661 men) came out at about 14.2 cm, a good centimeter more than the clinical average. Some of that is rounding up, but some of it is probably exactly what you said: a clinic isn't the bedroom.
All the studies are listed on malesizeindex under /source to check
So my honest take would be: the signatures here are probably real for many guys, but probably schewed as LetoMan nailed it, it's mostly who chooses to post.
