Issues for out-of-town implants and revisions

I received my first three-piece implant about two years ago from a highly recommended urologist in New York, Dr. Eid. Despite the fact that Dr. Eid is a well-known and respected implant specialist, I experienced a devastating infection two months down the road. I had traveled to New York from the Midwest, so the logistics and expense were substantial in addition to the costs of the procedure. After the infection, I had to travel back to New York where I spent eight days in a crowded hospital while they tested me for various bacteria that might be causing the infection. It was an absolute lifetime low point for myself and my wife. Needless to say, I was very disappointed with the procedure and had pretty much resigned myself to a flaccid penis for the rest of my life -- very depressing, to say the least.
However, about 18 months down the road, I saw a number of YouTube videos by Dr. Andrew Kramer, from the University of Maryland in Baltimore and was totally impressed by his knowledgeability and transparency. Thinking, in a last-ditch attempt, that I might try for a malleable, semirigid implant (because of its much lower potential for infection) I called Dr. Kramer, who got back to me within a day. Kramer is an amazing doctor, not just because of his experience and knowledgeability with implants, and especially, revisions, but he is also a most compassionate and responsive physician. We discussed the possibilities and options for a revision at length in several different phone calls and within a month, I was at the University of Maryland Hospital where Dr. Kramer was able to successfully implant an AMS 700, three-piece. It is two months down the road and I have no signs of infection and I’m delighted with the results of my surgery. As an out-of-town patient, my wife and I were delighted with the logistical support and, among other things, assistance with the entire logistics package that we received from Dr. Kramer in his office. Based on my experience, Dr. Kramer is a rare breed -- a physician who is a master of his discipline and, at the same time, truly cares. I don’t know how he finds time, but he responded to every email and/or phone call the same day. I truly feel that the caring and responsiveness of Dr. Kramer has given me a new lease on life.

Hi, I'm sorry for everything you've had to go through, but in the end it looks like everything went well.
Why did not you go to a second implant with Dr. Eid once the infection was treated? It was not possible? Why did you wait so many months to get another one? (It seems that the standard wait time after infection to get another implant is 6 months)
What is your opinion about Eid, do you think the infection was his fault?
How long did you have to spend in the New York hospital to treat the infection? How much did the costs go up?
I'm asking you all this because I'm considering going to Doctor Eid for an implant

Dr, Eid has one of the lowest infection rates of any doctor but somebody has to the be 1 in 300 for there to be the one. Glad it has worked out. I do not know how Dr. Kramer does it nor finds the time to enjoy the view from his home if he is ever there. He even took the time to review my latest scans with radiology this week. Very nice guy. Cheers.

Just interested in what was the state of your D for 18 months. Did Dr. Eid remove the infected implant and not replace it at that time. After 18 months i would think that there must have been a lot of scar tissue. Were you unhappy with Dr. Eid for some other reason. His infection rate is the lowest in the world.

I have nothing bad to say about Dr. Eid. He is a nice guy and I chose him because of his impressive website and ostensible track record. No surgeon can always guarantee quality results, regardless of how competent they are. I have no way of evaluating why my implant resulted in an infection. However, my subjective experience in having to return to New York and spend more than a week at a crowded New York hospital while they poked around looking for the bacteria that caused my infection was horrific. Of course, it added substantial logistical expense, but that was secondary to my enormous disappointment at the failed procedure.
My experience with Dr. Kramer and my revision at the University of Maryland Hospital was absolutely first-class and positive. I feel like I have a new lease on life and am extremely grateful. I highly recommend this iconic surgeon.

what was the first implant you received? I know the AMS now comes with an antibiotic/antibacterial component built right in. It's what I have now, and I have healed nicely, in less than 3 weeks.

agreed..smells fishy to me. I am in the upper midwest..and my Dr. was absolutely fantastic. He is extra careful and cautious. It's not an "in and out"..you stay overnight in the hospital so he can monitor you for at least 24 hours. No baths for 6 weeks, no cycling for 6 weeks. he has great success, and I can't recommend him highly enough.
