Drive home after surgery

Hello everyone. This is my first post on FT although I have been an active lurker for more than a year!

I'm having implant surgery with Dr. Kramer in Baltimore next month and have a question regarding driving home after the operation.

The operation is in the early part of the morning and I was thinking of departing, by car and as a passenger with my wife driving, the afternoon of the operation.

We live almost 8 hours from Baltimore. Would it be too uncomfortable or simply unwise to drive 2-3 hours that afternoon, spend a night in a hotel somewhere and drive the remaining 4 or so hours the following day?

Dr. Kramer's office says that it should be OK to do this but I'm wondering how comfortable it would be.

All comments and suggestions are welcome!

Personally, I would say if you can afford to drive half and then grab a motel, that would be best. Laying flat was uncomfortable so sitting up will be worse... plus you are probably going to be pretty groggy most of the day. :)

I did a 5 hour drive three days after and it was ok on day one if your not flat most of the time I think your going to have extra pain. Check out hawk’s post he drove 4 hours home same day . He was hurting because of it if you can stay two days on your back after the surgery it will make the recovery easier.

I would not even think about it. You will want to rest 2 days with ice as much as possible. I used Motrin and it really helped along with ICE. You will love the outcome with Dr. Kramer and his team, they are the best. I had a friend who also went to Dr. Kramer and he stayed at the Days Inn there and said it was very good. I choose Residence Inn and used the room service. Had Cather removed at hotel the next morning and it was a breeze. Girlfriend just followed direction and not a problem, just feels funny.

I'd wait at least 2 days as I drove back on a Saturday to NC but drove only half the time but we made it in one day. Wed. surgery, drove him sat so I stayed till it was very easy to make the trip. Any questions just ask

Dirtman is right of course. Why the rush? My operation was Wednesday and the wife collected me Saturday. That was perfect. Till my departure I was in the good hands of doctor and nurses, one never knows whether there might develop complications. DON’T be impatient, you might regret it...

I wouldnt drive while using the pain meds you will get, OxyContin. Not only unsafe, illegal, but your

balls wont like it too much.

I agree as that same timing worked for me, for the first one. Last time, however, I did ride home in our car on the second day following the surgery. It was only a 1.5 hour trip as I used a local doctor (Tampa) for my revision. I brought ice packs and tilted the seat all the way back and took pain meds. It was ok, but not pleasant.

Hi Tom. You say "not pleasant". How unpleasant was it? Do you have something to compare it to?

Hey buddy, I think his wife will be driving... at least I hope so cause you are very correct about narcotic pain control. :)
