Good Afternoon Guys,

I am scheduled to be operated with Dr. Eid on 2/21/2020.

I'm considering staying at the Bentley $108/night refundable or the Garden Suites Hotel by Affinia or $192/night non refundable with kitchen. My operation is at the Manhattan Eye & Ear Infirmary.

I do not intend to cook, I just need a close clean place to stay.

Anyone stayed at the Bentley?

Junior

I chose Airbnb. Glad I came earlier since the first place was in Flushing, but totally miserable, dirty. After 2 nights I left and I was lucky to find a different location , more expensive, but did the deal. Total for 1 month$1,000 for housing. Next week I go back to UK where life is so much cheaper, few times cheaper! God bless the Queen!

A bathroom with a walk in shower and tiled walls is very helpful. When you are partially inflated, swollen and sore you can just walk in and pee. Buy prepared meals that you don;t need to cook. If you have a freezer load it up with ice ahead of time.

Best of luck

I stayed at the Bentley recently from January 8-13th . It is only a few min walk to Eids office. The hotel itself is above average and I had a room with king bed, shower/bath combo and a mini fridge. Nice views of the East river and Queensboro Bridge ! The only thing missing was a freezer for ice or something to keep things frozen. I simply called the front desk every so many hours and they brought me buckets of ice. That was the only drawback as I found the hotel to be located less than a 10 min walk to all amenities you could need. As for food I bought a few things before surgery and kept them in fridge or in my dresser if they were dry goods. Would definitely been better if they had a fridge with freezer. I used Uber Eats and Door Dash apps for local food delivery when I wanted a prepared meal.

I am currently holed up in the Bentley Hotel almost 48 hours after Dr. Eid installed my bionic Johnson. I get the catheter out and dressing off today at the doctor's office (about a block and a half). It will be an easy walk. In fact, I walked to the hospital (MEETH) for the surgery.

I will second the street noise coming through the windows of the Bentley at all hours, even up around the -teen floors.

I have so far ordered ice buckets 6 times in 2 days, and they knock on the door in 5-10 minutes with the fresh batch.

The rooms here have K-cup coffee makers (in case you want to bring your own coffee pods). Theirs is Green Mountain Columbian, a little less powerful than I prefer.

The food service (ButlerMenu.com) is a bit pricey, but their choices are pretty varied, the food is better than you would expect, and generally is delivered to your room door by bicycle messenger in 30-45 minutes. The food is billed to your room. I place an order and put half of it in the (dorm-sized) fridge to graze on later. There is no way to warm food in the room though.

The staff here are very friendly and helpful.

In fact, breakfast just showed up and I have to empty the catheter bag. I gotta go.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all of your ideas & comments!

I have made my reservations at the Bentley, being close to the Manhattan Eye & Ear Infirmary. The rates are reasonable as compared to when I came to NYC in Dec 2019 for my initial visit. The only draw back is no freezer, glad to hear about ice bucket every few hours.

In Dec 2019, I stayed at POD 51 cheaper than the Bentley, yet in December 2019 rate for the POD 51 more than double than the Bentley for Feb 2020. POD 51 is adequate, 97 sq ft, 2 bunk beds, but we had to share 4 baths on the floor.

In December, we came to NYC, with a cell phone with no data, I now have a data plan & I feel I can get better access to the city. The only problem, old phone cannot load some APPS like uber or lyft etc. Do I need it? I've only been on an uber when someone else did itl We live in NH & I drive everywhere.

Lastly in December, we both came to NYC, my wife is legally blind & she was truly overwhelmed with the crowds. Doesn't anybody work anymore? I am thinking about going alone, it was very stressful at times.

Once on a trip in Las Vegas, I ended up in the hospital on the trip, went to clinic & two different hospital, by two different ambulances. My wife slept at the foot of the bed. I am thinking she would be better in NH, vs. NYC if something happened. It also takes some time to get use to her surrounding in a ne hotel.

I'm sure other have came to NYC on their own & have done so with no problem. Will I be able to walk back to the Bentley on my own or with a taxi?

Lastly, I do not intend to tell my family, that I'm going to NYC. Only my wife & older brother will know, unless something goes wrong. Any good ideas what to say when I get back. Thanks!!

Re: walking to the Bentley after surgery... Short answer: NO!

The hospital will not allow you to have surgery until they have verified you have someone who will be responsible for you. When you register at the hospital, they verify (they need name and phone number) that someone will meet you in recovery. Dr. Eid's office will provide you with recommendations for medical chaperone services. Their job is to meet you in the recovery room and escort you to your hotel room.

Walking will be the last thing you want to do after your day in the operating room. You cannot drive, and the escort will not. Cab cost less than $15 from MEETH to the Bentley.

My chaperone was a caring older lady who simply guided me to the taxi pick-up, and accompanied me back to my hotel room. I will admit it was nice to have a sympathetic person to help post-surgery. She has done this many times over the years so she is well versed in chaperoning. She ordered my first bucket of ice from the front desk when we got to the hotel. There was no way she was going to physically support me as I am more than double her weight, and that is not her job. Cost for the escort was $80.

I decided to leave my wife at home because she tends to be impatient and doesn't handle boredom well. Having her with me would be more trouble than comfort, and IMHO it was well worth $120 (I also tipped the escort and cabbie) to get the chaperone service.
