Urinating post op
Urinating post op
So I come out of op with penis taped/bandaged and pointing up in the air. I suppose I will have a catheter initially but what after it is removed and I am on plane flying home and have to pee. How does that work? What if the swelling prevents urinating? Are these things of concern?
Re: Urinating post op
First answer, ask your doc what they will do with your penis post op.
In my case, I kept it pointed up using a jock strap they provided at the time of surgery. It was no problem to point it down to urinate. Also left it down during the warm (hot) baths my doc recommended post op. It does not have to be pointed up every second.
You should not get on a plane, or go far at all from your surgeon, till you know you can urinate ok. If you do a hospital stay overnight, they would probably remove the catheter and make you pee before you leave. In my case it was day surgery and I removed the catheter myself two days later (normally would be a day later), but was asked to stay close for 3 days (night of surgery and two more) before flying home (for multiple reasons, not just to make sure I could urinate). Doc also put me on Rapaflo for a couple of weeks to help make sure I didn't have a problem, since during pre-op testing they thought I had a little BPH. For the first 10 days urinating was more difficult. Hard to start, split stream, stop/start, shoot different direction from aim (hit all the walls at one point or another), but it worked. After 10 days or so it was normal, as I think swelling subsided.

Re: Urinating post op
Matthew, my surgeon kept me overnight in the hospital until I urinated the required volume to be released. The catheter, of course, was removed before leaving the hospital. Followup with the MD was one week, I believe, and regularly thereafter. Now one year between MD exams. My surgery went so well, pain handled well by the staff, and hydrocodone at home. I wish all candidates for implants the wonderful experience that I had. I showered the next day as I recall, but, of course, not soaping the incision. Best wishes to you.
