Today I was with a surgeon who advised me about the implant. I asked him how many implants he did a year. and he told me he did one a week. which comes out to me in about 40 or 50 a year at most. Is this a surgeon by reliable numbers? what would you do? . I think that in Spain the two or 3 surgeons that there are have similar numbers and I consider it a very big risk to go to another country to have surgery. what would you do?

I'd feel pretty comfortable with that number. Assuming he has been doing them for at least a few years, that's quite a bit of experience

What happens is that as I always read here that the most important thing of all is a high-volume surgeon. I don't know if that number corresponds to a high-volume surgeon. since the surgeon is the most important in the matter of the implant

There are a lot of very good doctors around that do not do hundreds of cases a year or are well known. That being said there is a cosmetic element to this surgery. Like a doctor that does breast implants or a nose job. And knee surgery. In all of those as with IPP surgery there are doctors who are well known and used by famous people and pro athletes. But many doctors do breast reconstruction after breast cancer and knee surgery. The thing is to stay away from a doctor that does very few of these and has little interest in the surgery. In this study https://www.garber-online.com/pdf/Highe ... ctions.pdf the top group of doctors was 31+ cases a year. Doctors have learned from us asking questions so I do not know of a way to verify numbers now. used to be able to with a doctor search that had experience levels with how many cases a year the doctor did compared to others but that is no longer working for some reason. So it is difficult to verify what even the top doctors are doing.

Ask if the doctor does repairs and replacements. If not ask who the doctor sends men to for that work and that would be the next place I would contact for this. Repairs and replacements are more difficult and many doctors do not do them. Doctors that do them are generally more experienced and skilled in this surgery. Ask about activation (when you start cycling) wait time. Shorter wait times are in many cases an indication of a doctor with interest in the surgery. Ask to speak with a patient of the doctor to ask about size loss and follow up care. As there is a cosmetic element to this some doctors add cosmetic to the name of the business. In the end what you are doing is trying to reduce your chance for problems. The very low volume doctors still have over 90% of cases that do not need repairs or replacements. And even the best doctors have cases of men who have problems.

Based on numbers alone I would say 1 a week is good. My local doctors did 1-2 a year.

Good luck with this.

Doctors are businessmen. Some will choose to make implants a major part of their business. Some others like to have a broader based practice. I wouldn't automatically dismiss him at that level. His passion to learn & improve his skills are important also.

I think my surgeon only did that many per year. I got several referrals before I flew to Wisconsin to have him do the implant. So I would not hesitate if you can get some referrals from your doc. I would go ahead. One surgery a week is still pretty good.
