I see a lot about RTEs. What are they used for and how do you know if you'll get them?

There have been so many posts on this subject that it would probably be easier to check past post titles.

During the implant surgery, when the doctor measures for the cylinders, and let's say they get a measurement of 21cm. If the surgeon only has 19cm cylinders, they will use 2cm's of rear tip extenders (RTE).
In my case, I needed cylinders with a 22cm length. He had the correct size and thus needed no RTE's

I posted the same question a while back about RTEs because I didn't understand them and google was giving confusion answers. Not a long chat but some good FrankTalk contributors explained most of it I think: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=19078&p=174521#p174521
