Pay for inspection pre-implant?

Postby Mark1974 » Fri Jan 12, 2024 5:47 pm

Is there any way to get a custom inspection of a specific implant before surgery?

Born 6/15/74. I have substantial venous leak with fairly severe hour-glassing, but no hard plaques. My urologist is sexual health expert Dr. Laurence Levine who performed a Doppler Ultrasound and diagnosed me with VL in 2020. I also have mild BPH

The doctor I use has an implant you can see and hold on a model. If that what you're speaking of

No I don't have the expertise to really analyze it. I would like someone who knows what to look for to look at it before they put it in my body.

I'm sure the surgeon looks it over, but how carefully and how much expertise he/she has in analyzing it are another matter

Exactly the reason you'd want an implanter who does these things in large volumes. Mine had over 8000 under his belt when mine was done. 13 months later my Coloplast Titan is working as advertised. I'm very happy with it.

My understanding is that the device rep is in the OR with the devices (has the different sized devices and maybe different models). The doctor in many cases does prep the device and check it for correct function prior to place the implant. All this is observed by the trained device rep.

I'm not sure what you're looking for. The implants are in a sterile package. Normally any prep work is done at a seperate table by surgical staff that is all washed & suited up. This table has been called the back table. I'm pretty sure that this is common now days for infection control.

My opinion only. I'm sure that the implants are inspected during manufacturing. One benefit of a high volume dr is that his staff knows how to handle the implants. Its normal to also have the company representive in the surgery room. He/she knows what to look for.

Mark1974, does this address your question correctly?? If not please clarify what you're asking.

There is no one with more expertise in penile implants than a penile implant surgeon. And you don’t want any additional people inspecting, touching, or even getting close to your implant before it is put in your body. The risk of infection in that instance is many times higher than the chance they would discover some flaw in manufacturing.

The best thing you can do is go to a high volume surgeon. Someone that has put in a huge number of implants. That person has their technique down pat. That person will be best suited to notice problems and avoid them.

If you don't trust your surgeon to be that "someone who knows what to look for", then you've chosen the wrong surgeon.

This is a good answer.

The surgical instructions are online.
If you read that, you'll see that there are VERY specific handling procedures that apply to the implant parts.
Any additional handling will greatly increase infection risk.
