Does Name Brand Surgeon Matter?

After months of struggling and three consults (about 6 months ago I didn't know there were IPPs), I'm making final decisions. I've talked to two of the "big names" and a local Center of Excellence surgeon in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

I think the local doctor is probably the right choice for me. I'm single and dreading being alone in a different city with family/friend support far away and the prospect of traveling for several hours 2-3 days after surgery. And then being a long car ride or flight away to get back if things go south.

Am I nuts? I realize the names are names for a reason, but I think worrying about logistics and turning up my nose on a good local doc doesn't make sense.

Big names are definitely the favored here but…. I would question how many IPPs you’re considering Dr does in a year. I would want one that does a minimum of 50-60 a year much less than that and he might not have adequate experience to deal with any particular issues he runs into on your surgery. Most importantly does he know how to properly size…. Needs to be on the conservative side of aggressive as I’ve heard Eid state in many videos. I’ve read on FT recently of several cases where a surgeon undersized someone to the point they are considering going back for a revision before they even got to use it!! I used a Dr that was trained by Perito and Dr Perots office confirmed that he was a good surgeon. I feel I got a great implant done with one exception. about 30 years prior to implant I had double hernia surgery with mesh on both sides. My surgeon for the IPP was afraid to try to go around or thru the mesh so he put my reservoir sub dermal just under the first thin layer of muscle leaving me with half of a tennis ball sized bulge. Another friend of mine used him and he did not have any previous hernia surgery’s and his reservoir was placed thru the abdominal wall as most are and he can’t tel where his reservoir is I’ve often thought that one of the best surgeons would have found a way around this. Either way if the one your considering does a lot of these he would probably be good enough. The questions is,are you willing to take that risk.

Courage, you ask a good question. My first thing to say is a leading dr doesn't matter.....until it does matter. What you're looking for is a dr that knows what to do if he runs into a complication. Btw, men with ED seem to have complications regularly.

I suggest to try searching FT using the names of larger cities near you. If members see you searching. Frequently they'll contact you with their experience. I received several good reports of my dr that way.

In my case, my dr runs a full urology practice. So implants are a good percent of his work but he does a lot of other work. Operates 1 day a week. 1 to 3 implants per week.

In my opinion, searching for a competent dr is pretty important. Not all competent drs get a lot of publicity. You have to hunt for them.

Maybe one way to see if a doc does enough surgeries would be to find out how long it would take you to get a surgery scheduled. My doc is under the radar, and I couldn't get in for 2 or 3 months.

The day of my surgery, he did 1 or 2 others. I think he operated one day a week, but I don't know.
I did have a perfect result and that's all that really matters.

I went for a local surgeon who is in my insurance network, and I'm very glad I did.

But I vetted him. I looked at research he's done, articles he's published and asked him lots of questions in my pre-op meeting with him.

I traveled less than one hour by car to the hospital where he was doing the surgery. He implanted another guy the same day. I did ask him how often he does implant surgeries, and when he told me 5-9 per month I was good with that.

I hope this helps.

I think you are correct with your thinking. After care is worth a lot I think and being hundreds or thousands of miles away is a not best for the patient. If you no complications with the surgery such as scar tissue or something else that requires one of the best doctors that is. And if you have a really good doctor close to you. Sometimes the center of excellence doctors get that from other products than just IPP. But if you do your research then local is best even with a slightly less skilled doctor.

Now in my case my local doctors were so bad that they advise men that a large number who have the surgery locally end up having the IPP removed as the results is so poor. That was true 7 years ago and still true earlier this year when I went back for a checkup. There are lots of really good doctors out there. And there are lots of not so good doctors out there. You just need to avoid the not so good doctors.

Newbie443, very well said. Just avoiding the worst moves you up into the competent range.

Not being bad is good.

If I'm in Murfreesboro, Tennessee (for example), and not near the Hakkys, Eids, Clavells or Peritos, I would start by looking up Center of Excellence (COE) surgeons using my zip code in the Coloplast Men's Health site, applying the Erectile Dysfunction filter to exclude Testicular or Urinary Incontinence device COEs.

I would also check for COE seal surgeons near my zip code on the AMS 700 EDCure site.

This would give me a list of a few Coloplast and AMS affiliated surgeons. From this list, I would prioritize starting with the surgeon who is the oldest by age.

Performing 25–30 surgeries per year and hosting some ED educational webinars typically qualifies and certifies someone as a COE surgeon.

Personally, I would feel more comfortable with a 60-year-old COE surgeon with more surgeries and lessons learned under his pocket than a 29-year-old COE surgeon who started performing surgeries a year ago after urology residency and a prosthetic urology fellowship.

Very true, but Hakky is a young guy who does exceedingly well. It’s very important to check the facts and exact numbers they’ve done. I think one would be best of sticking to the Clavell, Hakky, Perito, Eid, and Kramer for this important operation.

The right surgeon is the single most important factor, when getting an implant.
You are letting inconvenience take priority oven future happiness with your implant.
Once you go bionic, there is no going back. I choose someone over 200 mile from home and had to take my wife and disabled Daughter with me but I don't regret doing it. Dr; Hakky did a fantastic job of maintaining my size and I have been very satisfied with my results and what my sex life is now.
Please don't put your dick in the hands of anyone but a quality high volume surgeon!
It's your most prised possession and worth the inconvenience. You risk significant size loss and worse at the hands of a surgeon who has little experience.
Just my two sense worth
