Clavell Patients: How does Post-Surgical Care Work?

Rough couple of days since salvage. I'm trying to look forward.

For anyone who's gone to Clavell, how does post-op care work, like who inspects incisions or troubleshoots your pump technique? Same question for Hakky or any other surgeon you have to take a plane trip to?

I'm doing my best not to blame the surgeon I went to (he didn't want me infected) but there's some regret about not going elsewhere.

I had Dr. Clavell install my implant just over 2 years ago. I researched, read, studied, watched as much as I possibly could regarding this surgery before deciding to go ahead. I knew that what I had going on down there (very little) was not the way I wanted to live the rest of my life with my beautiful wife. Dr. Clavell's dozens of YouTube videos was a big part of me being comfortable with him, along with others on FT that had great outcomes.

I mention this because I had this same question for Dr. Clavell, "how can you care for me when I'm implanted on Wednesday and fly home 2500 miles away on Friday?"

He assured me that all would be well, he'd be available via text most anytime and with Zoom and Facetime he could give me any guidance or recommendations I'd need. Which was 100% true. I kept my grubby hands off of things down there for ~5 weeks, the incision healed perfectly and when it came time to deploy the pump I knew exactly what to do. I mean, really? Do people need training on how the pump works? You squeeze the bulb and then you press the button----that's the owner's manual (although there is one online from AMS you can peruse and other videos online) I personally didn't feel I needed any coaching or checkups, but when I had questions I contacted him via text and he got back to me ASAP.

When I found myself back in Houston about a year post-op, I dropped in to his office to say hello and he took a look and was visibly proud of his work....but not as proud as I am! I paid out of pocket for Dr. Clavell to be my surgeon, it could have cost me a mere $200 copay at my local Kaiser, but I happily paid over 100x that to have one of the top implant surgeons in the world fix the only penis I have.

If you have special considerations due to your surgical history, Dr. Clavell may feel differently about his post-op protocol than he did with me and many others coming in for their first implant. Call him, talk to him about it. Unlike some other high volume docs, it's not a race for him or how many he can jam into men in one $urgical day, he wants you to be safe, healthy and happy.

Dr Clavell gave me his cell number to text him with any follow up questions or concerns. He called me the day after surgery to check up on me at my hotel. I also sent him pictures to show my recovery progress. When I had questions after flying home he always got back to me with answers same day. I also have a video conference follow up appointment with him this Thursday.

Thank you. Yeah, about the pump. I said something trivial because my real concern is how he deals with infection for distant patients. I should've just said it. *[EDIT: I'll just discuss it with him]*

I consulted with him before and have contacted him again. I have to wait some months before any attempt with an IPP so the consult will be later in the spring. .

You have been dragged through hell and back. Sorry to hear all you’ve had to endure just trying to get your erection back.

The total out of pocket cost (in addition to the surgeon’s fee) for me and my husband to have my surgery done by Dr Clavell in Houston was about $3500. That included nonstop airfare, hotel (4 nights), food, prescription meds, and Ubers. We flew coach and stayed in one of the hotels recommended by the surgeon. Could have spent less had we taken cheaper connecting flights instead of nonstops and stayed at a motel in the suburbs. I’m guessing out of pocket travel costs would be comparable for Hakky in Atlanta or Perito in Coral Gables FL. But more expensive for Eid in NYC.
