Dr Clavell or Dr Hakky for initial implant

Postby Throwawaya320 » Wed Aug 20, 2025 4:25 pm

After trying injections, I’ve now reached a point where I would much rather have the implant since injections are hit or miss. I’ve read a recent post on here about someone who got infected a few months after surgery with dr Eid so I want to minimize my risk of infection as much as possible. Between the two, who would you choose? Which surgeon has the lower infection rate? I couldn’t find anything online for dr Hakky. Thanks
25. Pills don’t work. Wanting to skip injections due to long term scar tissue development.

I'm going to Dr. Hakky for my implant in October, but I consulted with both of them and honestly you can't go wrong with either of them. I'm just outside Atlanta so Hakky is much more convenient for me, but I wouldn't let that be the only consideration. I just "clicked" better with Hakky, plus because he was local to me I met him in person instead of on a remote video call, so that helped as well.

Hakky is more a Coloplast guy (though he does both brands), Clavell is more brand-agnostic. I think both would put in whatever implant made the most sense for your situation and anatomy.

Have a call with both, it's a cheap enough way to test their vibe.

How is Clavell's current bedside manner and follow-up since moving offices?
Hakky probably wins here.

But I went with Clavell due to: penoscrotal incision, no catheter, and no 1 week in-person follow up.
Very happy with the results, but he is difficult to communicate with post-op -- so be prepared for that.

Clavell did mine, and I cannot say enough good things about the doc. I am very satisfied with my results and my experience with him.
I respectfully disagree with the comment regarding his communication. Saw you had your surgery in September 2024, maybe you caught him right at the transition when he still wasn't up and running? I recently had my surgery and his communication post-op was great. This has been echo'ed here by many guys. At least a few months ago, he was still providing his personal contact information and he would always respond as long as it was related to surgery. I did see in another forum of a guy who was texting him at 1am about non-urgent matters so he stopped giving out his cellphone number for free. Can still reach him via email or pay for his concierge services, which honestly, I believe they are worth it for your peace of mind!

I went to both because when I started this journey I was living outside of Houston so Clavell was easy for me to meet with, I would move to East TN in time so Hakky was closer.
They re both great doctors. Their bedside manner is different. Clavell feels more like an internist surgeon and Hakky feels more like a plastic surgeon. When I first saw Clavell his office felt like an accountants office, Hakkys had a salon feel.
That said, both are really good, their reputations well earned and you shoukd be well served by either. Id choose the more convenient of the two.

That was Clavell's old office. He opened his own private practice. The new one is NICE! Just look online.

I saw both too when I got my post-salvage revision. They both inspire confidence and were good about answering questions, including after my appointment. I went with Clavell whose communication has been good post surgery. I think you'll be fine with either.

Actually, Clavell's bedside manner is amazing. Regardless of office he gives you his cell phone so if you have any issues or questions, you're more than welcome to text. Probably one of the better bedside manners I've experienced and I've had a few surgeries.

Another upvote for Dr. Clavell's communication. I flew home 2 days post surgery back to CA and was in touch with him whenever I had a question or concern. He responded very quickly to my texts and asked for pictures to make sure what he was looking at was OK. Everything has worked out great. Just used it for it's intended purpose this morning.... ;)

Personally, I think the incidence of infection is likely more due to the patient than the doctor. Keeping your grubby hands off your junk while it's healing and following all the protocols to the tee are paramount.

One of the main reasons I chose Dr. Clavell was his pain management, I had zero pain and only took alternating Tylenol/Advil for a couple of days just to address discomfort, not pain. No catheter, no pain, surgery on Wednesday, flew home Friday, back in my office chair Monday.
