Ok, I had pretty bad scrotal and penile edema post implant.
The morning after I surgery, I took the dressing off and almost passed out. My scrotum was the size of a navel orange.
I could not do the dressing, so I went to the Free Clinic where I work, and 2 nurse friends of mine change the dressing for me. That day my scrotum was 64 cm (24 inches) in circumference.
The next day my Scrotum went to the size of a large grapefruit and I had to walk around the house holding my scrotum in both hands, I suffered for 3 weeks. It has now been 45 days and the scrotum is almost back to normal, as is the penis. The surgeon said grapefruit size scrotum was normal after a penile prosthetic implant.
What was your experience. I need your feedback please. The surgeon seems to avoid my questions.
Anyway here is the poll:
How big did your scrotum get after surgery?

POLL ABOUT EDEMA POST IMPLANT
Re: POLL ABOUT EDEMA POST IMPLANT
Gary,
I'm glad you are almost back to normal and I'm sorry to hear that you suffered that much swelling (due to what I don't know). I am 17 days post op and what little swelling I had is completely gone and rather than repeat myself, please read my last reply on my thread posted today. I would say your surgeon is bs ing you if he can't explain a complication that there may have been during your procedure. If he is just blaming it on getting an implant and nothing more he probably didn't do a great job and of course he won't admit that.
From what I've read on FT my quick recovery is not the norm but your case sounds extreme to me. Maybe you should have gotten a second opinion when your scrotum initially swelled up. Mainly though the question is who is your uro surgeon and what is his history and implant volume? Sounds to me his glibness is covering up a deficiency that lies somewhere in either of these questions..always go with a top surgeon in this field who does a high volume such as 150 at least..that is if your insurance matches up or you can afford to pay the cost.
Good luck friend and get past this rough part asap!

Re: POLL ABOUT EDEMA POST IMPLANT
Gary I had hardly any swelling at all. There was some bruising but not much swelling. I think everyone heals differently though, and I'm sure the way the procedure is performed also plays into it. Day four was the most sore day for me and then there was great improvement every day thereafter. After two weeks it was basically doing very good.
Re: POLL ABOUT EDEMA POST IMPLANT
Very smaamount of swelling after surgery for me. Enough to mess up size perspective but not enough to be really noticeable. I am a fast healer though. Another note to this was that I expected the possibility of swelling and was practicing swelling reduction even during my overnight in the hospital. I had been warned by my surgeon to be careful of how I had the bed adjusted and that recliners were often a problem. To help prevent swelling, your penis and scrotum need to be higher than you heart. Recliners and such often put them at the lowest point.
Another difference that may have reduced selling for me was that scar tissue required that the reservoir be placed with its own incision thus reducing the amount of blunt dissection (making a hole by pushing a finger through a weak spot) practiced.
All in all, recovery here somewhere beyond 4 sigma to the speedy and painless side, others have not been so fortunate.

Re: POLL ABOUT EDEMA POST IMPLANT
I had very little swelling of the scrotum, not nearly as much as you did. The skin on the scrotum was very sensitive to touch, especially on the left side. The left side is still a bit sensitive to touch now 7 months post-op, but more a nuisance than a problem.
From what I have read, different people react to the surgery differently. Maybe partly because of differences in their bodies and partly because of different surgery techniques. I have no idea about how much could be caused by each of those. I did take some supplements to try to speed the healing. My heaing time seemed to be about average or slightly longer so I am not sure the supplements helped. But one test case is not enough to draw any conclusions from one way or the other.

Re: POLL ABOUT EDEMA POST IMPLANT
I had noticeable swelling and bruising. It was a shock when I undid the dressing on Day #2.
I almost never got off the couch except when absolutely necessary for 7 days after the surgery. And I kept everything "propped up" above my heart to avoid swelling, as instructed.

If you dig back into older posts you will find results that vary all over the map. Everyone is different. Use the search function on the implant forum and search for "grapefruit" and you will find you were not alone.
At the same time, there are others who had almost no swelling, and others more moderate swelling but not grapefruit size.
In my case, almost no swelling and almost no bruising. Narc pain meds first 24 hours only. Rode on an airplane home day 3 ater surgery and was comfortable with only Advil, no donut cushion. Drove a car and did grocery shopping day 4. Walked 1.5 miles day 5 and went out to dinner with friends, same day. Walked 3 miles day 6, though that was too much and had to back off from that. What minimal swelling and bruising I had was gone by day 12 or 13. I think thats better than average. Many, but not all, of Dr Eid's patients who have reported results here in FT were similar to or even easier than my experience and BxGuy1's experience. A few of his patients have reported somewhat more difficult recoveries. Picking a great surgeon seems to increase the odds of an easy recovery, but doesn't guarantee it.
