Which type of surgery did you have?

Mine was above the penis with a vertical incision which descended into the penis.

Other have a horizontal incision above the penis.

Some others an incision in the scrotum which does not leave a scar which can be scene.

I am interested in this.

I saw videos on You Tube and medical sites which showed incisions above the penis with a horizontal incision. I saw a couple which went through the scrotum.

The day of the surgery I expected a horizontal incision above the penis. The next day when I took the dressing off I almost passed out. The incision was vertical which extended into the base of the penis, and my scrotum was the size of a large navel orange. The day after that it was the size of a large grapefruit,
My other question is "does the type of incision increase the possibility of severe edema?"

I had a scrotal incision and to look at it about 14 days post surgery I can barely see it now and the stitches are almost all dissolved. I had very little swelling for only about 3 days and I used a lot of ice to keep it down which made a big difference I think. I can't answer your other question definitively, but from my own scrotal incision I had very little and short lived edema. I hope yours is getting better rapidly for you now.

I had a scrotal incision. The scar is invisible if it exists. I had almost no swelling or bruising. OTOH some docs claim the pubic incision is the most "minimally invasive". I don't know how my scrotal surgery could have been more minimally invasive than it was. AFAIK there are great results with both pubic and scrotal incisions. I am not a medical professional and have no expertise. Based on results reported here in FT I really doubt that scrotal vs pubic makes all that much difference in general.

I had an incision in the scrotum. From what I have seen that incision can be either horizontal or vertical. Mine was vertical, about 1 1/2 inches long and ended below the penis. My doc used the glue that is like crazy glue to seal the incision. Therefore there were no stitches to be removed. I did have one stitch that was poking out slightly at the bottom of the incision. I asked my doc about it at my visit 3 weeks post-op. He whipped out his scalpel, put a liquid on to numb the area and did something to remove the stitch. There was a drop or two of blood but no pain in that. After a month or two post-op my incision could not be seen, although I did not care if it could or not.

I can't comment on which is the best technique since I have only my own experience. I assume docs consider it and they seem to have different opinions.

Hi Gary,

I was implanted with the Coloplast Titan in December 2007 via infrapubic incision (horizontal incision above the penis).
I had some swelling and discoloration for a short time --- healing process was unremarkable and my wife and I have been fully enjoying my Implant for the past 5+ years and counting.

I recall there were some benefits to the surgical incision above the penis. Mine was at the scrotum and swelling was significant but I stayed on the couch, with everything brought to me except a few trips to the bathroom. The swelling was mostly gone in the first few days and now I'm at 3 months and have regained the baggy scrotum and the pump hides much better. Scar is practically gone.

I forgot to mention in the description of my scrotal surgery that I did not focus after surgery on staying horizontal as some others have suggested. From the time I came home the day after surgery I sat in a desk chair at my computer doing stock market analysis about 12 hours per day. And 3 days post-op I drove myself 20 minutes down the freeway to the rehearsal for a chorus I sing with and sat on a metal folding chair, with a foam donut cushion, during a 2 hour rehearsal. Still I did not have the swelling some had. I did use an ice pack the first two days after coming home and a heating pad for 10 days after that. I don't say this to brag but just to point out that different people have different reactions so see what your own body needs and follow that. If you have a lot of swelling, horizontal is probably best, but if you don't you can be more active.

I had a scrotal incision about 2.5 - 3" long in the seam. Now that it is healed it just looks like the seam again, not a scar. Almost no swelling with the procedure. Oh I also had a horizontal incision on my abdomin for the resevoir.

From I've learned from my uro, the incision above the penis is less painful and cause less discomfort. However there is a minor chance of the nerve injury in which case there will be a loss of sensitivity.
On the other hand, scrotum incision is painful and sometimes looks scary first few days but there is no risk of the nerve damage.
