Pump up questions

I had an initial pump up in the doctors office Tuesday. It hurt like a mother. He said to wait a few days before trying it on my own. I tried briefly last night and the bulb is easily accessed but is kind of like trying to squeeze air out of a golf ball - the bulb is very hard. I am trying tonight in the tub and while using a wash cloth, that someone here suggested. The bulb on the key chain is not quite as rigid. I know there is no malfunction but I am surprised the implant bulb is so hard. I don't remember reading that here.
So, does the anatomy get used to the pain from squeezing this thing and does it get easier over time? Does the pump loosen up from repeated use? Any other suggestions to get thru this? I could take some pain pills or some Aleve or drink a six pack if that would help. I think I am close but this is a little exasperating. I'd like to know from others if this is typical. I should mention I am not a weak man, so that is not my issue.
Thanks a lot guys!
