jock strap, aka athletic supporter

Postby Lenny1965 » Fri Oct 28, 2016 1:07 pm

Could someone please tell me if I need to purchase a jock strap, aka athletic supporter, before the procedure? Or does the hospital provide? Thanks.

You will be sent home with a supporter, most likely stuffed with cotton pads. You might wait before using a jock - briefs might turn out to be more comfortable for you. Be sure to take home the hospital urinal - you'll be glad you have it for the first few days. Good luck!

DG or anyone, why would I need a urinal? Isn't a urinal for someone who can't make it to the bathroom? Various posters have said they've driven themselves home the day after the procedure. That's what I was planning on doing. Am I wrong about recovery times? Thanks.

You'll likely find urination very clumsy at first. The urinal makes things much easier, but of course it's up to you. I'm speaking based on experience, and you can take it or leave it Whatever you decide, let us know how things go.

I went to the motel room the night of the surgery with the catheter still in and a collection receptacle. They suggest I take the hospital urinal too, that it would come in handy. I never used it. When I needed to empty the receptacle I'd go to the toilet and empty it. I did have to do that about every 4 hours including getting up at night, so be careful to not fill it up all the way. It can sneak up on you.

Obviously you don't need a urinal if you have a catheter in place. After the catheter is removed you may find the urinal handy - not because you can't travel to the bathroom - but because your aim will be bad. The urinal makes it easy to keep things contained until your aim improves.

Thanks for the answers. I think I'll probably just sit when I need to urinate after the procedure & not bother w/ the urinal. Thanks again.

Just one more point of view. I was not placed in a supporter, rather, I was wrapped, and then taped with my penis pretty much sticking straight out. As soon as the catheter came out and I needed to pee, I definitely used the urinal, as I couldn't point my penis anywhere near the toilet. It was easier to hold the urinal at the end of my penis. After the bandages came off, I still found it more comfortable the use the urinal, or better yet, just go in the shower where I didn't have to aim at all. It took a few days before I was comfortable to aim it into a toilet. My advice, take the urinal. It can't hurt to have it in case you need it, and if you don't, good for you.

Here's how I was sent home from the surgery center....no jock, just taped up and I wore a very loose pair of sweat pants home. After the dressings came off a couple of days later, I did find that a jock strap provided needed support, but I couldn't stand anything pressing against the penis, so I cut a hole in the jock strap so my penis could just stick out.
