20 % of implants will stop working by five years....

Postby wolfcreek » Sat Jan 21, 2017 10:24 am

I read this figure in one of the numerous medical research articles I have read over the past few months, but I can't remember where I read it. Did anyone else read this same article? It also said that an even higher percentage would stop working by 8-10 years

Maybe, but you have to wonder where the numbers come from.
Dave, 80, Maryland - Implant (Titan) 2008 by Dr. Andrew Kramer (failed Sept 2020) - never used due to a stroke that, among other things, ended my sex life.

If true, a good reason to get a Titan with a lifetime guarantee.
I have used my Titan to hang towels on, change a tire, pry open a pickle jar, and move furniture.
It is a rugged tool.
Implanted with colorplast Titan 3 years ago. Davinci radical prostatectomy 6 months ago. Very happy with the outcome of both procedures.

LGX 21cm .Milam 01/13/16. Horror; both service and surgical outcome. hated infrapubic installation. Kramer revision 03/01/17. 22cm Titan +1.5cm extender. Those who think their opinion is the only one that matters are a danger to themselves and others.

I note that, in this article, the AMS Ultrex implant was used in over 50% of the cases studied. The Ultrex is now off the market and replaced by the AMS LGX, redesigned and more reliable.

Inflatable implants have only been around since the '70s (if I remember correctly) and every medical device and treatment is an individual experiment.

Is the risk worth the benefit? is the question we each must ask ourselves.

Implanted March 2nd by Dr. Kramer with AMS/LGX. Had a problem lower left (scar tissue) and he placed a larger (thicker) implant as you can here on the YouTube video. Got all back, ED over 10 years before Implant.

Don't kid yourself. I thought my implant was gonna last forever too. But it broke at just under 5 years of moderate usage. Hopefully yours will last longer than mine did.... Enjoy it while you can.

By the way, the article I am looking for was an academic research paper written by a group of surgeons, and published in a peer reviewed medical journal. As I recall it stated that "80-85 % of implants continue to work after five years" (meaning that 15-20% will stop working before five years).
