Yes, indeed. A reality check is warranted. A penile implant is an invasive and traumatic surgery, so to be considered with great concern.
On the other hand, the dim view of the two pages cited focus on the AMS Ultrex (now off the market and replaced by the better-designed AMS LGX). The article also notes that the AMS CX an Mentor Alpha (now known as the Coloplast Titan) had a lower failure rate.
You do your research, pay your money and take your chances in an attempt to attain a better quality of life.
Thanks for postting, Alibaba.

Re: Extensive info on penis issues/implants
In terms of the three currently most used implants and their failure rates, I have heard directly and indirectly from the two supposedly top implant surgeons in the world that the AMS LGX has the highest failure rate of the three.
43 yo, ED forever from VL
Fit and active
Implanted December 2015
Titan XL 24 cm, no RTEs
Dr. Eid
Activated day 13
Sex after 3 weeks
Gained length and girth
So far It works perfectly
Only one advice: Find a world class surgeon

My surgeon had told me more or less the same. According to him, the Coloplast Titan is the best.
Born in 1950, ED since 2007 (colon cancer)

Dr. Leiber, Freiburg, Germany

I had heard the same about the AMS failure rate which surprised me when a couple of the recent failures here on FT were Coloplast. What is the variable? Use, installation? Day of the week they are made? With the changes in ownership of the implant manufacturers are the subbing out manufacturing, moving off shore, hiring cheaper help? I read one doctor's web site the other night who said he does many revisions and almost every failure he sees is the connection or the tubing at the connection. There is no definite answer I think. Stand around and wait for lightning or play ball.

Re: Extensive info on penis issues/implants
This is the study Dr. Dineen did regarding the use of VED daily before surgery. At the end of the article they mention a potential issue with the AMS LGX having an "S" shape deformity.
"Early in our experience, we used a preponderance of lengthening cylinders (AMS LGX) believing it to theoretically be the ideal cylinder for this protocol. In recent years, however, we have no preference since the LGX failed to show superiority in patient satisfaction and can become a liability (“s” shape deformity) if the patient was not compliant with the post operative daily inflation." Check out the photo of a penis with the "S" shape deformity.
They also said that the Titan is "a cylinder that is unrestricted in girth and length expansion." I didn't know that.
I got a the Titan and I'm very pleased.

Sucks to be in that 5% to 20% failure rate (within the first 5 years)
Trust me on that..... And, by the way, mine was the "improved" AMS LGX model. I wonder how many implantees with the LGX have successfully passed the 5 year mark so far? Anyway, now saving for my replacement surgery (or waiting for Medicare) - whichever comes first....
Re: Extensive info on penis issues/implants
According to that research paper “ Patients should be informed that a 5% to 20% failure rate is expected in the first five years and the majority of devices will fail in 10 to 15 years and will need to be replaced.”
Thanks for posting that link, Alibaba. That is the study I read a while back but couldn't locate recently...
As I said, it sucks to be in that 5% to 20% group (with insurance that won't pay for it)....

This is a great thread.
I'm 75 and got an AMS Ultrex in 1995. Had it replaced in 1999. Got a new AMS 700 LGX in 2013.
