When did you(r surgeon) choose maker and model implant?

At least one surgeon I know does not pick Coloplast or AMS until after the operation is inder way an examination of the patient's innards is done.

How many of you implantees knew beforehand what you would get? That is another way of asking how many surgeries did NOT have both Coloplast and AMS devices available during the operation?

Thank you

We decided that I would have AMS. My choice. Size to be chosen during surgery. I trusted him completely. I'm glad I did.

For me, decision was made at the official preop appointment and testing. Then, confirmed on the day of surgery.

More to the point: Is it usual or is it rare to have or to not have both AMS and Coloplast devices availabe for implant at the time of the actual surgery.

It is my failing to ask unclear questions. Please forgive my lack of clarity.

What I am trying to figure out is, does the surgeon have both Coloplast and AMS available during the operation. Apparantly Dr Eid does and feels it is vital to the standard of care.

One of the main factors in my decision to seek treatment outside my local area is the lack of this option locally.

My local surgeon said he would implant an AMS LGX the first time we met, but then switched to recommend a Coloplast. This switch made me uneasy so I researched and asked Dr Eid how he decides.

So, I would like to know if, when you had your implant, did your surgeon have both makers' products on hand?

Mine is going in this Monday and it is going to be a Coloplast. As I have said in other post I interviewed 3 doctors. 2 AMS guys and one Coloplast guy. They all said at the first exam they would all use a Coloplast. One of the reasons I went with the Coloplast guy.

Lost Sheep. I have done a lot of research the last 3 months. I would be happy with either one. 70% of all implants are AMS. I think you will be happy with either one. I am sure that a doctor is going to use one that he get the most technical support from. Most of the doctors have both. Remember Eid will not even be looking at your dick until the day before surgery. He has to keep both on hand. With his volume there is a representative there from both companies there everyday.

I don't know if both would have been available as an AMS rep. assisted the surgeon. He had a complete assortment of sizes and RTEs available. I was adamant concerning the AMS. I would want to know before my surgery what brand implant I would receive. Not have a Dr. make that decision for me at the last moment.

Thanks for the answers so far. This gives me perspective I did not have.

When I first got the go-ahead for an implant, I favored the AMS LGX, but now believe I will be satsfied with any working implant. However, the AMS CX is apparantly more natural in appearance and feel and the pump easier to operate than the Coloplast pump or the pump availanle with thr AMS LGX.

Dr Eid convinced me that the ideal time to choose the implant is during surgery and with the judgement that is available only through experience. But maybe that is not quite as important as I thought.

Donnie;
I have agreed with everything you have said until now. Although I have some medical knowledge (maybe more than the average guy due to my occupation) my doctor is the expert. If I said I really want the AMS, I would be very disappointed if the Dr. said OK. I would hope that he would open me up and then use his best judgement and years of medical knowledge and experience to give me what was in my best interest. Sorry buddy, just my opinion.

Larry,
I respect your opinion, however, there are circumstances that must be considered.
My Dr. showed me both implants. I asked about the pros and cons of each. We also discussed the fact that my wife was older and did not want a hard erection. We had that with a VED and intercourse was painful for her (she has fibromyalgia). I was adamant concerning the AMS for that reason. If he had the liberty to put whatever he wanted in me and chose Coloplast, it would have been devastating for us. It's my dick and there is NWIH I am going to let anyone chose what goes in it. There is a huge difference between the two brands.
